A Second Season We Didn’t Need

In Another World With My Smartphone 2 (Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. 2 / 異世界はスマートフォンとともに。) is a sequel we didn’t need. The first season of In Another World With My Smartphone wasn’t good, and this one isn’t either.

Even if you haven’t seen the first season, you should be able to figure out what this anime is about from the title. It’s an isekai anime in which the protagonist has a smartphone. But, it’s not just any smartphone. It’s a magic smartphone.

This smartphone can do anything. So, what we have is yet another generic isekai with an overpowered, boring protagonist. And the second season doesn’t fix any of that. It’s more of the same content from the first season. The only difference with this season is that there are more girls, which is good.

So, in the first season, Touya Mochizuki found one or two pieces of Babylon. What’s Babylon? It’s the name for a collection of high-tech, floating facilities. Each facility specializes in a different thing. I don’t remember what every facility specializes in. But one is a hangar for giant robots and another can copy things.

Yes, there are giant robots (think Gundam) in this series, too.

Anyway, the reason I brought up the Babylon facilities is to say that this season focuses more on them. Specifically, it focuses more on locating the rest of the facilities, such as the hangar.

But, if you’re thinking locating Babylon facilities sounds interesting, it’s not. There’s no challenge in locating them. Touya finds them all pretty easily, walks inside, and kisses a cute girl to register his DNA profile. That’s all there is to it. It’s not like he has to fight his way in.

Wives Six, Seven, Eight, and Nine

At the end of Season 1, Touya had five fiancées, who I’ll be referring to as wives because they basically are. These were Yumina Urnea Belfast, Elze & Linze Silhoueska, Yae Kokonoe, and Sushie Urnea Ortlinde. And in Season 2, an additional two wives join Touya’s harem.

The first of these two new wives is Lucia “Lu” Rea Regulus. Lu is a small girl with light short, light green hair. And like Yumina and Sue, Lu is a princess. As soon as Lu was introduced, I decided she was better than any of the previous five wives.

But, the second new wife is even better than Lu. Hildegard Minas Lestia is, you guessed it, yet another princess who gets engaged to Touya. She has long, blonde hair and often wears armor because she’s a knight. As a swordswoman, she has a lot in common with Yae.

So, Touya has seven wives by the end of Season 2. And that’s all the wives he’s going to have, right? Wrong. There’s apparently a prophecy that says Touya is going to have a total of nine wives. So, who are the remaining two wives?

It’s kind of obvious if you look at the cover art for this season.

While not part of the harem yet, Leen is going to be one of Touya’s wives. I believe she’s the administrator of the first Babylon facility Touya discovered. I could be wrong, though. It’s been years since I watched Season 1.

And the final wife is going to be Sakura. Sakura is an elf girl introduced in Season 2. However, in this season, she doesn’t have any romantic interest in Touya. She actually has amnesia, so she doesn’t even know who she is. But, I’m sure that’ll get cured later.

The Duchy of Brunhild

There’s one other fairly substantial development in Season 2. Touya now has a nation of his own, the Duchy of Brunhild. I don’t remember if he received land from one or multiple kingdoms. But, the end result is that he now has a small nation of his own.

Why would other kingdoms give land to Touya, though? Did he threaten to destroy them with the power of his smartphone if they didn’t? No. But, the decision was made with the balance of power between neighboring kingdoms in mind.

You see, there are two notable facts about Touya. The first is that he’s extremely powerful. He has a magic smartphone that can do anything and now also has an army of mecha. So, naturally, whatever kingdom he’s aligned with has an upper hand. But, Touya also isn’t allied with a single kingdom.

We need to remember that (at least) four of Touya’s eventual nine wives are princesses. At this point, we don’t know anything about Sakura. She might be an elven princess. But, we know for a fact that Yumina, Sue, Lu, and Hilde are princesses from different kingdoms.

So, even if their kingdoms are all part of the same alliance, there’s a bit of an issue. Let’s say Touya spent all his time in the Kingdom of Belfast. That would give Belfast increased sway over the other nations in the alliance. It’s for this reason that Touya received his own nation to reside in.

Also, having a nation of his own allows Touya a bit more freedom. He can seek alliances with other nations on his own. And he doesn’t have to worry about how his actions may reflect on a nation that isn’t his own. You know, actions like amassing a mecha army.

Conclusion

In Another World With My Smartphone 2 is actually better than the first season. In the end, I gave it a 3/10. It’s still bad, but it’s not horrible. Something I found out, though, is that the light novel/manga is ecchi. That would make the anime more watchable.
