Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Episode 1

The Brokenhearted Mage

In Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Episode 1, we catch up with Rudy. Last week’s Episode 0 didn’t feature him at all and instead was about Sylphie. So, how’s Rudy doing? Not well. At the start of this episode, it’s clear he’s still heartbroken over Eris.

We don’t have any indication of how long it’s been since Eris left him. But, I’ll make a guess and say it’s been a few months. And after all that time, Rudy’s still carrying around a lock of her hair. Also, even though that’s a bit creepy, I kind of get it.

I guess the issue is with how Rudy’s using Eris’s hair. When he misses her, he touches it and thinks about her. That’s what’s creepy. But, if he used her hair as a reminder that he needs to keep fighting, that would be different.

Anyway, Rudy’s now heading up north in search of his mother, Zenith. I don’t remember if there were confirmed sightings of her there, or rumors, or what. But, finding Zenith is his current goal. And, I also don’t remember if we even know what happened to Zenith. I feel like we got a little teaser of her at the end of Season 1.

On his way north, Rudy meets the adventurer group Counter Arrow. Some of the members, particularly Suzanne, feel bad for Rudy and talk to him on their trip. It’s during this conversation that we get a bit of information about the countries of the north.

Overall, the northern countries are poor. But, there are the Three Great Magical Nations that work together and are doing fairly well. The Kingdom of Ranoa trains mages. The Duchy of Neris creates magical implements. And the Duchy of Basherant focuses on arcane research.

Adventurer Party Counter Arrow

Counter Arrow is an adventurer party with five members. There’s Suzanne, Sara, Timothy, Mimir, and Patrice. We don’t know what adventurer ranks Counter Arrow is. But, it seems pretty safe to say they aren’t S-rank adventurers. If I had to guess, I’d say they’re a B- or A-rank party.

For context, Dead End (Rudy, Eris, and Ruijerd) was an A-rank party. Though, I’m pretty sure they were strong enough to be S-rank. Also, Fangs of the Black Wolf was an S-rank party. That’s the party of Paul, Zenith, Ghislaine, Geese, Talhand, and Elinalise.

Anyway, back to Counter Arrow. Suzanne is the sub-leader of the party. That means she’s the one who calls the shots when it comes to combat. But, she’s not the actual leader of the party. She’s also a frontline fighter who uses a sword. And she has my favorite character design of Counter Arrow.

Sara is the youngest — and presumably newest — member of Counter Arrow. She’s an archer who specializes in mid-range fighting. Her personality reminds Rudy a lot of Eris. And that alone makes her a good character in my book.

Timothy is the actual leader of Counter Arrow. It’s a bit unclear why Suzanne isn’t the party leader. But, I guess it’s because Timothy founded the party. Though, while he may not be the leader in combat, he does have leadership qualities. He’s good at protecting the party’s image. Oh, and he’s a long-range mage.

The final two members are Mimir and Patrice. Mimir is another mage, but one who specializes in healing. So, he plays a different role than Timothy. And Patrice is a frontline fighter like Suzanne. But, based on his armor and appearance, he seems to fill more of a tank role than Suzanne does.

Time to Move On

At the end of Episode 1, Rudy has a bit of an epiphany. He was wondering why none of the other adventurers were trying to flee. It was clear that they weren’t going to survive without his help.

But, then he remembered. They weren’t trying to flee because they’re a party. And being a party means fighting to protect each other — not running to save yourself. If he, Eris, and Ruijerd were in a similar situation, they’d do the same thing. They wouldn’t abandon each other.

Once he realized that, he was able to stop feeling sorry for himself. It reminded him that he has a job to do. And even if he’s not with Eris and Ruijerd right now, they’re both working hard, as well. So, why should he be the only one not doing his part?

I thought this was a pretty good bit of character development for Rudy. He’s been relying on others for pretty much his whole life in this world. And now, for the first time, he’s setting off on an adventure without Roxy, Eris, or Ruijerd to lean on.

But, then came the very end of the episode. We finally got to see what it was Rudy was carrying in the pouch on his waist and it broke the illusion. I assumed that’s where he was keeping Eris’s hair. However, that’s not what was in the pouch. Or, at least, that’s not the only thing in the pouch.

No, in classic Rudy fashion, the memento he kept in the pouch is a pair of Roxy’s panties. He then cries into them like a psycho. And when he tosses Eris’s hair into the fire to symbolize that he’s moving on, he keeps Roxy’s panties.

Conclusion
