That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 3 Episode 49 Review

Tensura Is Back (Again)

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is back with the first episode (Episode 49) of Season 3. Yes, I’m going to be continuing the episode count from the previous seasons rather than starting from 1. Why? That’s how Crunchyroll is doing it.

So, let’s get something out of the way right here at the start. I’ve been a Tensura hater for the past two seasons. Well, hater might be a strong word. I don’t hate it. But, I think I gave the first two seasons a 5 or 6 out of 10.

With that said, I’m going into this season fresh. I won’t judge it based on how I felt about the previous seasons. And, I’m actually kind of looking forward to this season. Compared to how bare the winter 2024 season was, Tensura Season 3 seems exciting.

Now, since this is the first episode of the season, I didn’t have the highest expectations. I figured the majority, if not all, of the episode was going to be setting up the season. That was true for the first half of the episode, but not the second.

Much to my surprise, we actually got into some real content in the second half. And, I think one reason for this is that there was a recap episode last week. Since this season “started” with a recap episode, the first real episode didn’t need to cover any of that.

This is the ideal way to use a recap episode. I hate when anime throw recap episodes in the middle of a season. Also, I’m pretty sure the first season ended with a recap episode, which makes no sense. Starting with a recap episode should be the norm. Good job, Tensura.

Diablo’s Special Assignment

Alright, I know I praised this season starting off with a recap episode. But, I have a confession to make. I didn’t watch the recap episode. I never watch recap episodes even though I rarely remember what happened. Still, I like that it’s there as an option.

Should I have watched the recap? Probably, because I didn’t remember where Season 2 left off. But, even without the recap, this episode did a pretty good job of reminding me. In the last season, Rimuru became an official Demon Lord after Falmuth attacked the Jura Forest.

How did Rimuru become a Demon Lord? He killed the entire Falmuth army. And how did he become an official Demon Lord? He defeated one of the existing Demon Lords (Clayman) in a duel. Destroying Falmuth’s army and becoming a Demon Lord isn’t enough for Rimuru, though. He still needs more revenge.

Diablo

This is where Diablo comes in. While Rimuru was killing Clayman, he sent Diablo to deal with the Falmuth Kingdom. Does this mean he sent Diablo to destroy the kingdom? Not quite. Diablo probably could take over the entire kingdom by force. However, that’s not the route Rimuru wants to go down — if he can help it.

Rimuru would much rather not be viewed as a major threat by other nations. So, Diablo’s special assignment is to crush Falmuth from the inside. He needs Falmuth to collapse and come under the control of the Jura Forest in a way that doesn’t seem suspicious.

Though, if we’re being honest, anything bad that happens to Falmuth is going to look suspicious. A lot of nations are going to be wary if Falmuth suddenly falls after starting a war with the Jura Forest. And, many nations are already suspicious of the Jura Forest.

Subjugating the Kingdom of Falmuth

How does Diablo plan to take down Falmuth? Well, he actually has a pretty good strategy. He’s going to get the nobles of Falmuth to willingly back a plant from the Jura Forest as the next king. And, he’s going to use the power of propaganda to bolster Rimuru’s image.

So, let’s break down how this is going to work. Diablo gave the Falmuth Kingdom three options. They can become a vassal state of the Jura Forest. They can remove their current king and pay reparations. Or, the war can continue and they can all be slaughtered.

Obviously, Falmuth isn’t going to choose the third option. Diablo also assumes the nobles would never go for the first option, either. Doing so would mean giving up their status and power. So, that only leaves the second option. The only problem is that the reparation amount is way too expensive.

Rimuru guesses that Falmuth will try to negotiate the cost of reparations down. But, Diablo tells him that the Jura Forest isn’t going to allow this. They’re going to hold firm on the amount, which will force Falmuth’s hand. The nobles will oust the king and have him pay the reparations alone.

This is where the next phase of the plan comes in. Once the king’s out, Youm, with the backing of the Jura Forest, will ascend to the thrown. Effectively, this will make Falmuth a vassal state. But, it has the appearance of being the will of the nobles, not a hostile takeover.

Why would anyone in Falmuth trust Youm if he has the backing of Rimuru, though? Well, that’s where the propaganda plays a role. The official story isn’t that Rimuru committed genocide. It’s that Rimuru managed to stop Veldora from destroying all of Falmuth. He’s a hero.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of Tensura Season 3 Episode 49? Are you glad to see the series make its return? Did you watch the recap episode that aired last week? And, do you expect there to be any unforeseen issues that arise regarding Falmuth’s subjugation?
