Boruto Episode 159

Boruto Episode 159

The Hashirama Cell

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations episode 159 saw Team 7 confront Mr. Anato, who was going berserk. His enraged state was brought on by the introduction of the Hashirama cell into his body — which I think is a new development for the series.

Previously, every time we saw something going berserk due to Hashirama cells, it was a White Zetsu. I believe this is the first time we’ve seen a human go berserk because of it (but I may be wrong about that). And as we learn later in the episode, this is the result of an individual not being compatible with the cell.

I do believe this idea of compatibility was mentioned in the past. From what I remember, it should have come up in discussions about why Naruto’s Hashirama cell arm isn’t available to the public. While Naruto is compatible with it, most people aren’t, which is why standard prosthesis is still the norm.

After attempting to restrain Mr. Anato, Mitsuki was implanted with the Hashirama cell himself. As we saw, Mitsuki also had a negative reaction to the cell, but because he’s a homunculus, he was able to withstand it better than the average person.

Despite his incompatibility with the cell, I was kind of expecting this to be the start of Mitsuki obtaining the wood release. I figured that his body would acclimate to the cell over time and eventually fully absorb it. But thanks to Dr. Yubina, I guess that won’t end up being the case.

It’s still possible that a small number of Hashirama cells are present within Mitsuki’s body, but I think it’s for the best that they aren’t. We already know Mitsuki has some powerful jutsu, multiple chakra styles, and some kind of sage mode. So I think adding wood release to the mix would be a bit much.

Dr. Yubina

Dr. Yubina is a medical professional who lives on the outskirts of society. And by outskirts, I mean literally out in the middle of nowhere with no civilization in sight. But her remote location is also how she makes her living. With no other doctors around, shinobi who are injured in the region have no option besides her.

How Dr. Yubina makes her living and why she lives in the middle of nowhere isn’t what’s really interesting about her, though. What’s interesting is how her medical ninjutsu works. Normally, medical ninjutsu is shown to be relatively non-invasive and painless, but that’s not the case with Dr. Yubina.

Dr. Yubina’s medical ninjutsu is extremely painful, which ties into her sadistic personality. She gets pleasure from seeing her victims patients in pain and hearing their screams. However, the more painful her treatment is, the more effective it is as well — or so she claims.

I’m hoping we get to spend more time with Dr. Yubina in the upcoming couple of episodes so we can learn more about her and her jutsu. It’s not as if there aren’t other characters with random abilities that aren’t connected to specific jutsu, but we don’t know if that’s the case here or if she’s using a previously unseen jutsu.

For example, Karin’s healing ability isn’t connected with a jutsu. Instead, it’s the chakra in her blood that has healing properties. So it’s possible that Dr. Yubina’s healing is somewhat similar. And honestly, I don’t really know how her special kind of healing would work as a jutsu anyway. I can’t think of any other jutsu that are more effective the more painful they are.

The closest thing might be Hidan’s ritual, but that’s not a jutsu.

The Land of Silence

I thought that maybe we had been to the Land of Silence before, but after looking it up, it appears that it was only featured in one of the novels. So with that said, it’ll be interesting to see if there are any references to the novel just as the Hozuki Prison arc referenced the movie that took place at the same location.

But the novel aside, what do we know about this land so far? We know that it’s probably not too close to the Land of Fire considering it’s near the Land of Valleys, which was stated to be a significant distance away. But aside from that, its location in the greater world is unknown.

Another thing we know is that it’s viewed as a lawless region by the shinobi of the five great nations — which is why it’s the perfect place for a black market to be set up.

Now, you might think it’s odd that the five great nations would leave a small country that’s home to criminals alone. However, from everything we’ve seen throughout the series, the nations in Naruto don’t conquer and control foreign territory. I can’t think of a single instance in which that has happened.

Even countries that are known to be hotbeds of terrorism, such as the Land of Sound and later the Land of Rain, were generally left alone. They only become problems when they launch attacks on neighboring nations, and even then, they’re generally just repelled, not invaded themselves.

And I think the biggest reason for why this is the case is that if any of the five great nations were to conquer another land, even a small one, it could be viewed as an attempt to expand their influence and power. For the most part, I don’t think anyone would care if the Land of Silence was suppressed, but doing so would attract the attention of the other great nations.

Conclusion

So what did you think of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations episode 159? Do you think Mitsuki should develop the wood release? Do you think Dr. Yubina’s healing is a special ability or jutsu? And what are you hoping to learn from next week’s excursion into the Land of Silence? Let me know in the comments.
