Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 239

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 239

Did Boruto Fall Into the Ocean?

At the start of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 239, Boruto falls overboard and is rescued from the ocean by a boy with webbed hands. However, when he comes to on the deck of the ship, his friends tell him that he simply fainted due to the heat and never went overboard.

So, what really happened? Despite what his friends tell him, Boruto is convinced that he fell overboard and was rescued. He even believes that Ikada, a shipbuilding apprentice who comes to the stranded ship’s aid, is the one who saved him.

I’m going to have to side with Boruto’s friends on this one. If he fainted due to the heat as they state, he definitely could have hallucinated or dreamed that he fell overboard. And to him, that hallucination or dream would seem very real.

But, I’m not just siding with Boruto’s friends because the possibility that he hallucinated is there. I’m siding with them based on the fact that he was found laying on the deck of the ship completely dry. If he had gone overboard, he wouldn’t have been dry.

How do we know he was dry? Because a bucket of water is splashed onto his face to wake him up and we can clearly see where that soaked him. The rest of his body was dry. He’d have had to be laying there on the deck for a while to dry off, even in the sun.

As for what Boruto saw, I think it was a glimpse into the future. At some point in this arc, he’ll go overboard and be saved by a boy with webbed fingers — who will probably turn out to be Ikada.

The Funato Clan

We have the names of the top 3 members of the Funato clan. These are Araumi, Isari, and Tenma. However, during the Funato clan scene in this episode, we also see a female member of the Funato clan who also appears to be pretty important.

Although we’re not given her name, considering she’s shown alongside the other three, I think we can assume she’s the sister of Isari and Tenma. She also looks very similar to Araumi and Isari. But, considering Tenma looks nothing like his father and brother, maybe we shouldn’t assume things based on her appearance.

Still, the fact that 3 of the 4 Funato clan members in this scene all look very similar is probably important. Why? Because Boruto’s new friend Ikada also looks just like them. Ikada has the same skin, hair, and eye colors as Araumi, Isari, and the unnamed woman.

Ikada aside, I’m hoping we get to learn more about this female Funato clan member in the coming episodes. I don’t really care about her in particular. But I want to learn more about the Funato clan as a whole, and she’s one potential way to do that.

We still don’t really know what’s unique about their clan. Isari and Tenma are the only two we’ve seen anything from, and they have nothing in common. But I’m still assuming their clan has some signature jutsu or other ability that makes them powerful. I think we technically didn’t see either Isari or Tenma use jutsu at all yet.

Unfortunately, I don’t believe we’ll learn anything about the Funato clan in the next episode. That’s because it was already stated that the Funato clan doesn’t need to worry about the Leaf shinobi. So I’m guessing their leadership won’t be involved next week.

Who Is Ikada?

As I’ve already implied, I think Ikada is a member of the Funato clan. His appearance matches the appearances of the Funato clan members (aside from Tenma). And, since it was hinted that Ikada might have webbed fingers, I think that ties into what makes the Funato clan unique.

While we don’t know much about the Funato clan, we do know that Isari has gills on his neck. That’s a fish-like trait. And if Ikada has webbed fingers, that would be another fish-like trait. So, it’s possible that all of the Funato clan members have at least some fish-like traits.

We’ve also seen this before with the Hoshigaki clan. Both known members of the Hoshigaki clan have shark-like traits. They have gills and sharp teeth — though, the latter is fairly common within the Hidden Mist Village even outside the clan.

But, something that doesn’t quite add up is that Boruto inspected Ikada’s hands and saw that he doesn’t have webbed fingers. So, how can we account for this discrepency? Will Boruto be saved by someone with the same silhouette as Ikada, but with webbed fingers? It’s possible, but unlikely.

What makes more sense to me is if Ikada’s webbed fingers don’t manifest all the time. It could be that they only activate when he’s in the water. Or it could be that there’s a jutsu that activates these fish-like traits. Whatever the case may be, I’m positive that the web-fingered boy is Ikada.

Also, just because I believe that Ikada is a member of the Funato clan doesn’t mean I believe he’s a member of the Funato pirates. He could have broke away from the clan at some point. Or, perhaps he’s an orphan who doesn’t even realize he’s a member of that clan.

What do you think of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 239? Do you think Boruto actually fell overboard? Or was that just a hallucination? Do you expect the female Funato member to be named? And what are your thoughts on Ikada? Let me know in the comments.
