Overview

Fate/Grand Order is a mobile, turn-based game featuring the characters from the Fate Series. Like many mobile games of its kind, it features an “energy source,” known as AP in this game, which the player must use up in order to play, and which replenishes slowly over time.

The main game is broken up into different segments and labeled as Singularities, with the first one, the prologue, being set in Fuyuki 2004 which should be familiar to those who watched Fate/Zero and Fate/UBW. After that, there are currently four other singularities that take place in Orleans, Rome, Okeanos, and London.

There are also frequent special events in Fate/Grand Order. The most recent one, which I believe is still going on is called The Garden of Sinners and is set in a haunted apartment building. If you’re planning on starting the game, just keep in mind that you must complete the prologue before you can play any special events.

While there is an actual storyline to this game, I stopped paying attention to it somewhere within the First Singularity. I’m sure the translation to English from Japanese messed up a lot of things, but even looking past that, the story isn’t any good. Things I could look past in the Fate series anime, such as the conversations that happen between the various servants, I’m unable to look past in this game because they tended to get fairly off-topic and I just didn’t care.

Cards

Fate/Grand Order is played by collecting cards that are then added to your party. These cards are gained by “summoning” which is essentially pack opening, however, you can sometimes gain cards by completing certain missions in the game or special events.

There are two main types of cards and then a third type which I’ll consider a sub-type. First you have the Servant cards, an example of which is shown below. These cards are the actual characters you will be using to fight in the game.

Next are the Craft Essence cards. These cards are added onto Servant cards in order to power them up in some way such as healing them for a certain amount every turn.

Both the Servant and Craft Essence cards have five different rarity levels which determine how powerful they are. The rarity can be seen by the amount of stars at the top of the card; one star is common, five stars is a super secret rare.

The third sub-type of card is the Experience card. These are used to level up your Servant cards, or increase their HP and ATK stats. Craft Essence cards don’t use Experience cards, however, instead they use other Craft Essence cards to level up.

Party

A party is composed of up to six different Servants and their corresponding Craft Essence cards. An example of a party is shown in the image below.

One thing I don’t like about this game is that the third slot of your party is always reserved for what is known as a Support Servant. This is a Servant card that doesn’t belong to the player. Some missions will give the player a guest servant option to choose for this slot, but often you will be selecting the Servant of someone off your friends list or just that of another random player.

I would much rather be able to forgo the Support Servant slot and just use a sixth Servant of my own, but I think the purpose of this was to show you other Servants you don’t have in the hopes that you’ll spend actual money to unlock more cards.

At the very bottom of the screen you may notice there is a spot that says “Total Cost” and in my case it’s at 96/96. Your party’s total cost increases as you level up in the game and this is how the game sets a cap at how strong your party can be.

You may also notice that at the bottom of each of my Servants there is a cost section and that shows the cost of the Servant card along with the Craft Essence card attached to it. Higher rarity cards generally have higher costs with the maximum being 16 and 12 for Servant and Craft Essence cards respectively. However, the Support slot does not affect the cost of your party so you can add whatever you want there at the start of each mission.

Conclusion

In the end, the story and dialogue of this game aren’t really any good which is why it’s a good thing you can skip all the dialogue. The gameplay also is fairly lacking, but what can you really expect from a free mobile game?

Really, the best part of this game is collecting all the cards and leveling them up. If you’re someone like me who loves collecting things and leveling them up in games, then this is the game for you. To prove how much I love that sort of thing, I even completed the Pokédex in the past couple of Pokémon games (with around half at level 100) and found all 900 Korok seeds in Breath of the Wild.

If I have to rate this game, I think I’d give it a solid 6/10 mostly because I’m just not much of a fan of mobile games. The game does look nice though and we all know that’s what really matters.

Overview

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? is an anime I haven’t seen in a few years at this point so I don’t really remember much of it other than that I liked it at the time. It’s almost like the bridge between most other fantasy shows and KonoSuba.

While I would say that some of the characters are precursors to those in KonoSuba, there are portions of the plot which resemble other fantasy shows. The dungeons in tower form with treasures awaiting at the top is reminiscent of Magi and the different dungeon floors reminds me of Sword Art Online.

In this anime, adventurers and support characters alike join familias which are essentially guilds led by a god or goddess. In the case of the Protagonist, Bell, the Hestia familia is the one he belongs to, but he is the only member other than the goddess herself.

The adventurers, and potentially the supporters, have levels and stats that go up after they defeat monsters in the dungeons. Typically the higher level players are in the larger familias and I believe level 6 is the highest that we know of in the anime.

Characters

Bell is your typical fantasy main character-kun, at least from what I remember. He is fairly well-rounded as far as stats and abilities go, and he’s oblivious to the romantic advances of his female compatriots. The one thing that isn’t standard about him is his hair which is white instead of the stereotypical main character-kun brown.

Hestia is a goddess and leader of her own familia. After failing to get anyone to join her familia, she finally recruits Bell. I view Hestia as a precursor to Aqua in KonoSuba in that she’s an apparent reject of a goddess since nobody would join her familia, but she isn’t quite on Aqua’s level of uselessness. Hestia is also the most popular character in the show by far.

Next we have Lilly and Welf. Lilly is a demi-human who basically serves as a pack animal for adventurers; carrying their supplies for them when they go into the dungeon. Welf on the other hand is a blacksmith who creates weapons and armor solely for Bell because he appreciates even low-level armor for what it is or something to that effect.

Finally we have Ais who is the primary love interest of Bell. Ais is the opposite of the damsel in distress. She is one of the strongest adventurers in her familia and she once saved Bell while in the dungeon, which is when he fell in love with her. Ais is also the protagonist of the spin-off series Sword Oratoria.

Conclusion

As I mentioned at the start, it’s been a few years since I last watched Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? so I don’t really remember most of the details. That said, I remember it was a good watch at the time and I ended up giving it a 7/10.

If you’re looking for a dungeon crawler anime that isn’t bad like Sword Art Online and also happens to have one of the most popular characters in recent anime, then this is probably the anime for you.

I also have (longer) reviews of both Danmachi: Sword Oratoria and Danmachi II.

School-Live!

School-Live!

Overview

School-Live! is a horror anime disguised as a cute school slice of life. What you’ll learn by watching just the first episode is that everything in the anime is not what it seems.

I don’t want to write spoilers for this series, but I will have to spoil the first episode if I’m to talk about the show at all. So stop reading now if even that is spoiling too much for you.

It’s a zombie apocalypse survival anime following four middle school girls as they live in some of the classrooms in their school.

The first episode is essentially seen through the perspective of the main character, Yuki.

In Yuki’s mind, there are no zombies and no danger. Instead she’s just part of a club which lives on the school grounds called the School Living Club.

It’s the end of the first episode where we finally see what the world is really like outside of Yuki’s mind.

Characters

Yuki, as previously mentioned is the main character of the show. She has become mentally unstable since the sudden appearance of the zombies.

As a coping mechanism, she has cut herself off from reality and is living inside a world she wishes was true. Because of this, the other three girls act as her caretakers to ensure she doesn’t do anything that could put herself in harm’s way.

Kurumi is the girl with twin-tails and is often seen with a shovel which she uses for protection. She is my favorite character in the show.

As I write more and more of these reviews you may be able to notice that I generally have a “type” when it comes to favorite characters.

Yuuri is the president of the School Living Club. As the club president she is in charge of the rations and everything else that goes on in the lives of the other girls.

The final girl is Miki. She’s not as close as the other three girls because she wasn’t with them since the start of the apocalypse. Instead she joined them later on and so she does not have some of the same collective memories that hold the other three together.

Conclusion

While I do think this is a very good anime, there are a few things that make it a bit hard to follow at times.

The first is that what we see as the viewers is not always what is real as we learn from the first episode. That by itself isn’t too confusing though, in fact, I like that a lot about the show.

It starts to get confusing once you add in that the show is out-of-order. It starts at the present, but there are various flashbacks, and then there are parts that are ambiguous whether they’re a flashback or the present due to the warped point of view that we get as the viewer.

However, even with the timeline being a little confusing, this was a very good anime and so I gave it an 8/10. This show was not at all what I was expecting when I started it, but it turned out to be even better.

The OP can be found here if you want to see how the show advertises itself.

Overlord

Overview

Since Overlord season 2 is scheduled to release Winter 2018, I decided it was about time to watch the original season so I watched it all yesterday.  Also you should keep in mind that this genre of MMORPG-type life in another world isn’t really my favorite.

I’ll start by saying that Overlord is probably the best I have seen in this genre, though that isn’t saying too much when the others I can think of off the top of my head are Sword Art Online and Log Horizon.  In my opinion, one of the most surefire ways to make your life in another world anime bland is to go the MMORPG route.

Skipping over the genre’s clichés for now, I think my least favorite part of this anime was their use of 3D animation.  I’m sure they used it in parts where I didn’t even notice, and that’s fine, but I’m not a fan of the generic 3D animation look that all the skeletal enemies in the show had.

Characters

Momonga, or Ainz, is the main character and he looks like a large skeleton.  Luckily, he wore armor that hid his edgy looks for at least half of the anime.  Like many main characters in this genre, he is overpowered.  He could destroy everything easily if he wanted to so for the most part there aren’t any real threats.

Next is Ainz’ right-hand woman, Albedo.  Along with everyone else in the guild except Ainz, she is an NPC.  She could have been a great character, but they decided to turn her into fan service.  At least when she is in her armor and ready for battle they cut back on both her fan service appearance and attitude.  It’s really the way she acts that disappoints me the most.

From here on, we’ll just group the rest of the characters.

We have the Guardians which are led by Albedo.  They guard the different floors of Ainz’ guild hall.  Each one is some different stereotypical character such as a demon in a suit or, my personal favorite, the vampire who dresses in gothic lolita fashion.

Finally, below the Guardians are the various other NPCs who are basically servants.  Among these are the Pleiades Battle Maids who appear to be some of the best characters in the show.

Conclusion

Since Overlord was decent enough, I am looking forward to the second season this Winter.  Unfortunately, however, my hopes aren’t too high for the next season because it seems like it’s going to become even more MMORPG based than before.

In the end I almost gave Overlord a 7, but decided that there were too many small things I didn’t like about it that added up.  This means it gets a 6/10 which as I mentioned at the beginning is still good enough to beat the other anime in the genre I could think of.
