Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 236

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 236

Isari and Tenma

In Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 236, we finally got the name of Araumi Funato’s son who broke him out of prison — and he didn’t even appear in the episode. His name is Isari Funato.

We got this information from Isari’s younger brother, Tenma, who looks nothing like his brother or father. While Isari was tasked with freeing their father from the Mist Village prison, Tenma has been in charge of the operation at Dotou Island and on the surrounding seas.

Unfortunately, we still don’t actually know anything about the jutsu used by the Funato clan. We haven’t seen Araumi do anything, Isari has only fought using his living weapon so far, and Tenma choked a random underling of his. None of them have used jutsu.

However, we do know that they can use jutsu. At the very least, Araumi can. That’s why he was in such a specialized cell within the prison. And since Isari uses a living weapon, he has a lot of chakra and therefore should be able to mold it into jutsu.

Tenma is a bit of a mystery for now, though. One of his underlings commented on how he should be the next leader of the Funato clan due to his strength and leading ability. So we know he’s no slouch. But even so, I can’t say I’m expecting all that much from him.

Based on the next episode preview, it looks like Kagura and the other two who were with him are going to be captured by Tenma. That means there will be six members of this Leaf/Mist alliance aboard Tenma’s fortress ship. I don’t see them having trouble taking him down even with all the grunts there too.

Rescue Mission

After having left the ship to make landfall on Dotou Island, Sarada and Mitsuki met up with Team 5. They then devised a plan to rescue everyone being held within the mine and split up into two groups.

Sarada and Mitsuki were tasked with infiltrating the mine and getting all the captives out. Meanwhile, Team 5 was tasked with securing a Funato ship at the dock to be used to escape from the island. Splitting up based on their specialties was a good decision. But I wish we got more out of it.

For example, let’s focus on Sarada and Mitsuki infiltrating the mine a bit more. And, although I’m not a fan of Team 5, we could have done the same with them. Make their commandeering of the ship more interesting than taking out a single guard and having Denki hotwire the ship.

I know what we got moves through the main points of the arc quicker than what I’m asking for. And I know a lot of people probably want the arc to be over with quicker. But I wouldn’t mind the arc as much if it actually spent time focusing on the characters doing interesting things.

One thing I will say I liked about this portion of the episode is that we got to see Sarada use genjutsu with her Sharingan. Sarada doesn’t actually use her Sharingan all that much. And she rarely, if ever, uses it to perform genjutsu.

Usually, when Sarada uses her Sharingan, she does so only to follow the movements and attacks of her opponents. However, that’s only one, small part of what the Sharingan can do. Performing powerful genjutsu is another part that I feel Sarada has neglected for far too long.

Infiltrating the Fortress

Boruto, Kawaki, and Buntan were selected to infiltrate the Funato’s fortress ship while Kagura, Kyohou, and Hebiichigo stayed behind on their own ship. This fortress infiltration team is the one I’m most interested in following, specifically because I want to see more of Buntan.

As I mentioned in my review of Episode 235, I think Buntan is the one who decided to break away from Shizuma and got Kyohou and Hebiichigo to join her. I really want to learn more about her motivations. And I think we’ll get that during this infiltration mission.

The fact that Kawaki is there is a big part of why I believe that. Buntan would never come clean to Boruto. The two of them just don’t see eye to eye. But Kawaki is different. Kawaki comes from a background very similar to Buntan’s. He can understand her feelings and I think that will help her open up.

So far, I don’t believe Buntan knows anything about Kawaki’s background. So before she can fully trust him, I think she’ll need to be given a quick recap. And once she learns about Kawaki, I’m looking forward to how she reacts. Kawaki basically lived through what Shizuma wants to achieve.

Shizuma wants to recreate the Blood Mist Village, a time in the Hidden Mist Village’s past when it was a brutal kill or be killed place. As we saw in this episode, Buntan is still influenced by that. She kills one of the Funato guards instead of incapacitating him — something Boruto didn’t agree with.

Kawaki was raised in a very similar situation. The difference is that while Buntan grew up hearing about this brutal way of life, Kawaki lived it. So I’m wondering if Buntan will respect Kawaki for that and be jealous of him. And if she is, I’m betting Kawaki will tell her it’s not something anyone should want to go through.

Conclusion

What do you think of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 236? What kinds of jutsu do you think Tenma will use? Can you think of a previous time when Sarada used Sharingan genjutsu? And why do you think Buntan broke away from Shizuma? Let me know in the comments.
