Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 3 Review

Magia Baiser & Leoparde

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 3 continues to prove why Mahoako is the best new anime of the season. Sure, Frieren is still better. But, of the new anime, there literally isn’t anything better than this. Every week, it delivers on what the series promised.

But, let’s talk about this week’s episode, specifically. A second member of Enormita made her debut in Episode 3. Kiwi “Leoparde” Araga is Utena’s senpai in the organization, having joined a bit earlier. And, unlike Utena, Kiwi actually wanted to join the evil organization. She wants to defeat the magical girls.

Alright, so at the end of Episode 2, we saw Kiwi watching over Utena after her battle with Magia Sulfur. But, apparently, she had been watching Utena even before that. She saw the whole fight against Magia Sulfur. And, as someone who hates Tres Magia, she was disappointed in Utena.

How could Utena flee from the fight? And why did she look so happy after doing so? Kiwi would never retreat. But, if she did, she’d go right back into the fray. So, is Utena actually worthy of being in Enormita? Kiwi decides to find out for herself by challenging Utena to a fight.

This is where we first get to see Kiwi’s Leoparde outfit. And, I’m not sure if I like it more than Magia Baiser’s outfit or not. It’s very revealing on the lower half. But, unlike Magia Baiser’s outfit, is completely covered on the top half.

We also get to see what Leoparde’s ability is here. She uses weapons, like grenades and guns. And she can even summon a bunch of large guns much like Gilgamesh’s Babylon Gate. You’re welcome for that, Fate fans.

I’d say Leoparde is a good addition. But, Magia Baiser understands me more.

Utena’s New BFF

Let’s talk about Utena’s new BFF, Kiwi, a bit more. Like, why did she join Enormita? I mentioned that she intentionally joined the organization. And I mentioned that she wants to defeat Tres Magia. But, why?

Well, her motivations are the opposite of Utena’s. Utena loves Tres Magia and wants to see them squirm. Kiwi hates them because they’re more popular on social media than she is. She wants everyone online to acknowledge how cute she is. And, she even resorted to posting risqué photos of herself to attract attention.

So, when Venalita appeared to offer a way for Kiwi to get rid of Tres Magia, she jumped at it. She didn’t need time to think about it and she didn’t even let Venalita finish speaking. But, that’s par for the course for Kiwi. She doesn’t think before acting.

There’s one thing that makes Kiwi a great character, though. Utena awoke something in her by torturing her. You know, like she did to the magical girls. After Utena electrocutes Kiwi, Kiwi falls in love. It’s unclear if she’s a masochist, though. Does she love Utena, or does she love that Utena abuses her?

I hope it’s the latter. But, it feels like it’s actually the former. That’s because, later in the episode, Kiwi makes some comments that suggest this. She tells Utena that she wants to get to know her body better. She asks for a kiss. And, she tries to drag Utena into a love hotel.

Hopefully, we’ll get a lot more Utena x Kiwi (or Magia Baiser x Leoparde) content going forward. I assume we will. However, I wonder if it will be overshadowed by the Tres Magia content. I’m not sure which I want to see more.

Having Fun with Magia Azure

Of course, I can’t end this review without talking about Magia Baiser playing with Magia Azure. Magia Azure isn’t my favorite of the Tres Magia. But, at this point, I don’t think any of them are bad. They’re all good in their own ways.

Now, something I theorized about last week was that the magical girls might all have their own kinks. And, so far, it looks like that might just be the case. That’s because, once again, we saw Magia Baiser binding Magia Azure. Bondage seems to be Magia Azure’s kink.

And, as expected, Magia Azure was looking forward to what Magia Baiser had in store for her. If it wasn’t clear enough for you before, it should be now. The magical girls want Magia Baiser to torture them. Magia Azure had no intention of winning here.

So, should we expect to see more wax play or something similar with Magia Sulfur? We don’t yet know what Magia Magenta is into. Will we find out next week? Or, will each of the Tres Magia be paired up with one of the Enormita girls?

Magia Baiser has had fun with Magia Azure more than the other two magical girls, so far. And Leoparde and Magia Sulfur seem like they’re a good pairing. So, it could be that the third Enormita girl (we see her in the OP) is going to be paired with Magia Magenta.

That could be interesting. But, I’d prefer it if that wasn’t the case. I’d much rather see the Enormita girls and the Tres Magia mix up who they’re partnered with. You know, to give us a bit more variety.

As much as I like seeing Magia Baiser binding Magia Azure, I want to see her with other girls, too.

Final Thoughts
