Gushing over the Tres Magia

Gushing over Magical Girls (Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete / 魔法少女にあこがれて) is one of the standout anime of the winter 2024 season. If we ignore Frieren, which began airing a season earlier, Mahoako — as it’s known — is my favorite anime of the season.

Okay, I know, Delicious in Dungeon is technically better. But, hear me out. Mahoako is an ecchi anime about torturing magical girls. That’s awesome. I don’t know what more you could ask for. It’s kind of the perfect premise for an anime if you think about it.

So, let’s talk about the magical girls. There are only three of them — if we’re ignoring the fact that all the villains are magical girls, too. These three are Magia Magenta, Magia Azure, and Magia Sulfur of the Tres Magia. They’re middle school students who transform and fight monsters, like all magical girls.

When transformed, the magical girls’ identities are hidden (by magic). So, none of their classmates or anyone else know who they are. And, that’s important because of the protagonist of the series, Utena Hiiragi. She’s classmates with Haruka Hanabishi, Sayo Minakami, and Kaoruko Tenkawa (the Tres Magia).

If only Utena knew who her classmates really were. Why? Because she’s a huge magical girl fan who likes the Tres Magia, in particular. However, Utena’s love of magical girls goes beyond that of being their fan. She doesn’t know it at the start of the series, but the thing she loves most is seeing them squirm.

Throughout the rest of the series, Utena explores the joys of sado-masochism. And, along the way, she helps awaken things deep within each of the magical girls she loves so much. Well, mostly Azure and Magenta to an extent — not as much Sulfur.

Enormita and “World Domination”

Alright, let’s talk about the first villain group of Mahoako: Enormita. The core enormita group has three members for the majority of the series. These members are Magia Baiser (Utena), Leoparde (Kiwi Araga), and Nero Alice (Korisu Morino).

While the Tres Magia each have different abilities, they’re pretty similar. Azure uses a sword, Magenta uses a spear, and Sulfur either uses a shield or giant fists. With the villains, however, things get more interesting. They have more specialized abilities, which makes them both more fun to watch and discuss.

Magia Baiser’s ability allows her to turn objects into monsters. Inanimate objects like scissors? Sure. Plants? Why not? Animals? Those are harder to control, but she can do it. These monsters she creates then tend to bind and/or strip the magical girls so Baiser can have her fun with them.

Utena Hiiragi as Magia Baiser from the anime series Gushing over Magical Girls
Utena Hiiragi as Magia Baiser

Unlike Baiser, Leoparde doesn’t care about “having fun” with magical girls. She wants to defeat them. And, to help her achieve that goal, she has a more combat-oriented ability. She effectively has Gilgamesh’s Noble Phantasm but for firearms and explosives. She can summon different kinds of guns and grenades via portals.

Nero Alice’s ability is the most powerful. Since she has an Alice in Wonderland theme, she can do things like control toys. And, more importantly, she can trap her opponents within her dollhouses. That second part of the ability could make her overpowered. But, her power is kept in check by the fact that she’s an elementary schooler.

Beyond these three, there are other members of Enormita. For example, there’s Venalita, the mascot of the group responsible for recruiting new members. He’s the opposite of Vatz, the mascot for the magical girls. Also, there are four older members who make up the “Lord Squad.”

The Lord Squad Shakes Things Up

What is the Lord Squad? It’s the name for the four founding members of Enormita. It’s simply a way to differentiate these four from the new members, Baiser, Leoparde, and Nero Alice. So we have Enormita and within Enormita there’s the Lord Squad.

The names of both groups come from Lord Enorme, the leader of Enormita. We don’t know how old she is. But, she appears to be in her 20s — so not a middle schooler like most of the other girls. Her ability allows her to create and control an army of blob monsters.

Sister Gigant is the second in command. She’s also older than most of the girls, either being in her late teens or 20s. She dresses as a nun and her ability lets her grow to giant proportions. Sister is also the most devout member of Enormita.

Matama Akoya and Nemo Anemo from the anime series Gushing over Magical Girls
Matama Akoya and Nemo Anemo

Loco Musica (Matama Akoya) and Leberblume (Nemo Anemo) are the lower members of the Lord Squad. They’ve been in Enormita longer than our main three girls. However, they’re definitely beneath Lord and Sister. They’re also middle schoolers, like most of the girls.

As you might be able to guess from her name, Loco Musica’s ability is music-based. She fights with music, which pairs well with her dream of being an idol. Leberblume is an assassin who can hide within and control shadows. Think of her like Shikamaru Nara from Naruto.

So, why does the Lord Squad exist? Well, they play the very important role of shaking things up in the series. Mahoako would have gotten stale very fast if it was only the three main Enormita girls vs. the Tres Magia. The Lord Squad inserts another faction into the mix. And, as an ecchi series, more girls means more fun.

Final Thoughts

I gave Gushing over Magical Girls a 7/10. It’s a solid anime if ecchi and magical girls are your thing — mainly the ecchi part. And, since I like both of those things, I thought it was good. There are some episodes that are worse than others. But, overall, it’s a good watch.

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 13 Review

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 13 Review

Enormita Hits the Beach

The final episode of Gushing over Magical Girls is here. I know, it’s a sad day. I wish this series had more than 13 episodes, too. But, all good things must come to an end. And, we can still hope for a second season.

While I wouldn’t say that this was an excellent episode, it was probably in the upper 50% of episodes. We got to see all the Enormita girls and the Tres Magia wearing bathing suits. So, that’s pretty awesome. In particular, I liked Utena’s original swimsuit that Kiwi-chan picked out.

It’s too bad that Utena didn’t end up wearing that one to the beach, though. I would have loved to see how the Tres Magia girls would react to that. I can already see Haruka freaking out about how exposed Utena would be. Kaoruko would likely make some comment about her being a pervert, too.

With that said, I still think Utena’s swimsuit was cute. I’d actually go as far as to say it was the cutest of the Enormita girls’ swimsuits. Kiwi’s and Matama’s were still good, though. Nemo’s was cute, but not great. And, Korisu’s was by far the worst.

The Tres Magia girls didn’t have very exciting swimsuits. They were all pretty standard bikinis. Haruka’s had frills. Sayo’s was the most revealing of the three, but still generic. And, Kaoruko’s was fairly modest. Of those three, Kaoruko’s was probably my favorite.

I’m sure Kiwi was happy to see Utena wear that tiny swimsuit she picked out. But, it’s too bad she still hasn’t gotten her love hotel date with Utena. Would you have preferred that over this beach episode? A love hotel episode would have been good. However, the beach gives us content of all the girls.

Still Gushing over Magical Girls

This episode almost gave us the perfect interaction between Utena and Sayo. It was still a good interaction and I enjoyed it. But, as I’ll explain in this section, it could have been much better.

Utena and Sayo were alone on the beach while everyone else was busy playing. If you remember from Episode 12, Sayo is starting to suspect that Utena might be related to Magia Baiser. However, she can’t just come out and ask that. So, instead, she prods a bit by asking Utena about her love of magical girls.

This, of course, causes Utena to begin gushing over magical girls (see what I did there?). And, that’s what I liked about this interaction. Utena got an excuse to talk to someone about the magical girls she loves. It also seems to have worked to convince Sayo that Utena isn’t Baiser.

Utena talking to Sayo about Tres Magia

Now, what would I have liked to see, instead? Well, we know that Sayo is still thinking about that massage that Utena gave her (as Magia Azure). Sayo and Utena were also putting sunscreen on at the start of their conversation. Do you see where I’m going with this?

What if, in an attempt to gauge if Utena is Baiser, Sayo asked Utena to rub sunscreen on her? I think Utena would have tried to resist, but ultimately would have done it. But, I also don’t think Sayo would have gotten the confirmation she was looking for.

After all, Utena only gave her that lewd massage because she was Magia Azure. Utena doesn’t know that Sayo and Azure are the same person. She doesn’t feel the same way about Sayo as she does about Azure. To Utena, this would have been a very uncomfortable situation, which would have been funny.

Magia Baiser’s Love

In Episode 13, all the girls got a bit of Magia Baiser’s love. When fighting the Tres Magia, Baiser turned an octopus into an octopus monster. But, because an octopus is an animal, it’s harder to control than Baiser’s usual plants and objects.

This led the octopus to attack everyone except for Baiser. Azure, Magenta, Sulfur, Nero Alice, Leoparde, Loco Musica, and Leberblume were all fair game. And, with the exception of Alice, the octopus gave all the girls some special service. In particular, though, it took a liking to Sulfur, who’s afraid of octopi.

Along with Utena’s swimsuit from the very start of the episode, this was the best content. I would have liked it if it lasted longer. But, I’ll take what I can get. It gave us good content featuring six of the girls, after all.

Magia Sulfur bound by an octopus monster from the anime series Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 13
Magia Sulfur bound by an octopus monster

It’s during this part of the episode when Leoparde mentions Baiser’s love. Leberblume calls out to Leoparde for help. But, there’s nothing Leoparde can do. She’s also caught by the octopus and says she can “feel Baiser-chan’s love.” Of course, that means she can feel the octopus playing with her body.

This idea that Baiser’s attacks are actually the manifestation of her love extends beyond the octopus, though. Azure defeats the octopus and then gets into a one-on-one battle against Baiser. During this battle, she intentionally takes a hit from Baiser and proclaims that the attack was full of Baiser’s love.

As Sulfur points out, though, this isn’t actually something Azure can tell from the attack. Instead, it’s what Azure is fantasizing about. Baiser has turned Azure into such a masochist that she gets turned on when Baiser hurts her. Sulfur puts it best: This is a battle between two perverts.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 13? Did you think a beach episode was a good way to end the season? Of all the girls, whose swimsuit was your favorite? And, which of the girls did you like seeing the octopus play with the most?

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 12 Review

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 12 Review

The Way Utena Uses Her Fingers

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 12 was a good start to the post-Lord part of the series. But, there’s one thing I’m confused about. Where did Sister Gigant go? At the end of Episode 11, we saw her capture Lord Enorme for Venalita.

We then saw her, shrunk down, hiding on Venalita so the Enormita girls didn’t see her. Where is she now, though? Did nobody question that Sister Gigant disappeared? If she’s working with Venalita, why isn’t she a member of the new Enormita?

It looks like Venalita isn’t done with pulling the strings from the shadows. At some point, I’m expecting Sister Gigant to reappear. But, in what capacity? Will she be a member of some new villain group started by Venalita? Will she join the new Enormita? It’s weird that she disappeared on us.

Anyway, in this episode, Utena almost accidentally revealed her villain identity to Azure. She didn’t transform in front of Azure or anything. However, she gave Azure a massage that very quickly turned sexual. And, Azure noticed that the way Utena uses her fingers felt similar to something she’s felt before.

I’m not sure if Azure has connected the dots yet. She didn’t go so far as to accuse Utena of being Magia Baiser. But, let’s be honest. How many people have felt up Azure like that? It can’t be many. So, it shouldn’t be hard for her to put the pieces together.

Even if Azure doesn’t realize that Utena is Baiser, this act is still going to have an effect. Azure (Sayo) is Utena’s classmate. Utena doesn’t realize this because of the transformation magic. But, Sayo very much does. I can’t wait to see how she reacts to seeing Utena at school (hopefully next week).

Natsuna, Akiho, and Mifuyu

Episode 12 introduces three new characters: Natsuna, Akiho, and Mifuyu. These are Haruka Hanabishi’s younger sisters. They’re also triplets, so I’ll be calling them the Hanabishi Trio to make things easy. For now, these three are very minor characters. But, what about in the future?

Could we see more Hanabishi Trio content going forward?

Now, I know some of you are probably going to immediately say, “No.” This is an ecchi series. Surely, there’s no way we’re going to get content of these kids, right? Well, I’m not so sure about that.

The fact that Korisu exists in this series kind of goes against that line of thinking. Usually, we don’t see ecchi content involving Korisu– though, we did once. The very first time she transformed, we saw that uncensored. However, I’d expect the Hanabishi Trio to function more like Korisu after that.

Korisu playing with Haruka’s younger sisters

But, what role would these three play? Do they actually bring anything to the series? As we saw them do in this episode, I could see them playing with Korisu in the future. Cute kids still count as fan service, even if it’s not ecchi fan service.

For example, we could see these three pretending to be the Tres Magia. And, if they do, Korisu would obviously play the role of Enormita. Their make-believe session could be a cute parallel to the actual battle of an episode. And, in fact, we kind of already saw that this week.

Before we got the fight between Korisu’s kaiju toy and a giant (mecha) Magenta, we got the make-believe version. The only difference here was who was playing each side. Korisu was playing as the mech and the Hanabishi Trio was playing as the kaiju. Either way, I could see more of this.

Kaiju Battle with Magia Magenta

The ecchi content involving Azure from the start of the episode was the best part of Episode 12. But, the Magenta content at the end was good, too. It brought back Magenta’s kink from earlier in the series.

When Loco Musica was introduced, it seemed like she was going to take over as the exhibitionist. However, the author of this series, in his infinite wisdom, thought, “Why should there only be one?” And, do you know what? He’s absolutely right. Why should there only be one exhibitionist?

As we saw, Alice wanted to try playing with her new toys for real. So, she turned her kaiju toy into a real kaiju and she turned Magenta into a giant to fight it. To Alice, this probably seemed like fun. But, Magenta didn’t view it that way — and the bystanders on the ground got a view of something else.

Magia Magenta turned into a giant by Nero Alice from the anime series Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 12
Magia Magenta turned into a giant by Nero Alice

What this fight really did, though, was illustrate to the Tres Magia how unserious Enormita is. There’s no way to spin this fight as being a serious attempt by Enormita to defeat the magical girls. Even Magenta — the dumb one — realizes that.

If Enormita wanted to win, why did Nero Alice turn Magenta into a giant? It’s clear that she did so because she wanted Magenta to help her act out a kaiju battle. Also, why were Baiser and Leoparde trying to strip Magenta while the battle was going on? To embarrass her.

With Baiser in charge of Enormita, these kinds of “attacks” are going to become more common. Yes, she always treated the magical girls this way. But, before, there was at least the illusion that Enormita was trying to win. That’s no longer there. It’s time for new villains.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 12? Do you think Azure realizes that Utena is Baiser? Are you expecting the Hanabishi Trio to become recurring characters going forward? And, should new villains get introduced in the final episode of the season?

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 11 Review

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 11 Review

Leoparde’s Secret Stars

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 11 was delayed for something like seven hours. But, it was finally released internationally. Not that this will matter for the majority of you reading this review. But, I figured it was worth mentioning in case the remaining episodes are also delayed.

Now, I want to start this review off by continuing our discussion of Leoparde’s stars from Episode 10. In Episode 10, Leoparde revealed that she has three stars. That’s the same number as Nero Alice, Loco Musica, Leberblume, and Sister Gigant.

But, it was unclear how or when she acquired those stars. Did she always have them? Did she only manifest them during this fight? Or, did she get them from some off-screen training arc that mirrored Magia Azure’s? At the time, we didn’t know. But, now we do, and the answer was kind of obvious.

Leoparde about to finish off Sister Gigant from the anime series Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 11
Leoparde about to finish off Sister Gigant

So, it turns out that Leoparde had three stars all along. She didn’t gain them during this fight or through training beforehand. And, that makes sense for two main reasons. The first is something I pointed out last week, which is that we had never seen her chest before.

The second, however, is even more important. At no point before this did we ever see a girl permanently increase her star count. Sure, Magia Baiser can multiply her stars when she gets really worked up. But, once she calms down, she reverts back to only having two.

We never saw a character start with fewer stars and work their way up to having more. So, it wouldn’t have made much sense if Leoparde had to do that. The other girls had their stars all along. The only things they gained were special transformations like Leoparde’s cat form.

Magia Azure’s Veritas Transformation

Speaking of special transformations, they aren’t limited to the Enormita girls. In Episode 11, we saw Magia Azure use a special kind of transformation after saying “La Veritas.” I don’t know if there’s an official name for this transformation. So, for now, I’ll call it a Veritas transformation.

If we find out that there’s an official name for it in the future, I’ll start using that name for it then. But, regardless of what the name is, it’s clear that the Tres Magia needed something like this. Otherwise, they were about to get power crept out of relevancy.

We can assume that Baiser’s special transformation is when she multiplies her stars. She looks a bit different when this happens and she becomes more powerful. We also know that Leoparde has a special, more powerful transformation. And, it doesn’t seem like a stretch that the other girls will awaken them, too.

Magia Azure's La Veritas transformation from the anime series Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 11
Magia Azure’s Veritas transformation

If the Enormita girls were the only ones getting power-ups, the Tres Magia wouldn’t be a threat at all. In fact, the Tres Magia weren’t that much of a threat even before this. So, these Vertias transformations are really only helping them barely keep up.

I mean, do any of us expect the Tres Magia to be able to defeat Enormita ever? If they could, the series wouldn’t be as entertaining as it is. They need to remain at least a little weaker than the Enormita girls — or at least weaker than Baiser.

If the Tres Magia are too strong for Baiser to dominate, then what’s the point?

Anyway, it’s unfortunate that we didn’t get to see too much of Azure’s Veritas transformation. The shot we got of her from behind reminded me of Yuki Yuna, so I wanted to see more.

Throwaway Pawn, Lord Enorme

I can’t say I was expecting Baiser to be able to defeat Lord as easily as she did. But, I thought how she managed to do it was pretty entertaining.

Baiser thought Lord’s goal of world domination was childish. That goal and Lord’s appearance weren’t matching up in Baiser’s mind. So, what did she do? She imagined that Lord was a child. And, apparently, that got her in the mood to fight because Baiser likes bullying the weak.

I was hoping for a little more ecchi content involving Lord. The spanking was good. But, we only saw that happening while she looked like a child. I would have liked to see more of it from the perspective of the other girls.

What’s more important, though, is the effect this spanking had on Lord. As Baiser was spanking her, Lord was losing her stars until one remained.

Magia Baiser punishing Lord Enorme from the anime series Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 11
Magia Baiser punishing Lord Enorme

At the very end of the episode, we find out that Lord was using borrowed power. She only ever had one star naturally. The other three stars were all the result of power she borrowed from Venalita. And, as Venalita says, Lord was only ever a throwaway pawn.

Venalita used Lord in order to bring out the true power of the other girls. So, we have to once again ask, “What is Venalita after?” At this point, we still don’t know. Though, as I theorized after Episode 1, it may be that Venalita wants to see magical girls and villains fight.

The answer may be that simple. Or, it may be that Venalita wants to defeat Vatz because of some rivalry. But, whatever his reason is, I don’t think it’s going to be complex. This is a parody anime. I doubt he’s collecting soul energy to power the universe.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 11? Were you waiting to watch the episode because of the international release delay? How strong do you think Azure is now that she has her Veritas transformation? And, was the fight against Lord all that you hoped it would be?

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 10 Review

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 10 Review

Loco Musica x Leberblume

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 10 was a very good episode. I wasn’t expecting the title “Loco Musica x Leberblume” to be like this. Obviously, that title implies something. But, I didn’t think that was the direction the episode was actually going to go in.

My expectation was that this episode would simply be about those two. From what we saw in Episode 9, it was clear that they have a pretty complex relationship. And, at the start of this week’s episode, we saw that they’ve been together since they were young.

What I wasn’t expecting was for Loco Musica and Leberblume to not only kiss but to go all the way. That might have been the best content of the whole series. I’m not sure if anything in these final three episodes will be able to top that. Unless, of course, we get more Loco Musica x Leberblume content.

Loco Musica and Leberblume kissing from the anime series Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 10
Loco Musica and Leberblume kissing

I guess I should also mention that Magia Baiser forcing those two to do that wasn’t expected, either. She said she was going to punish them for hunting magical girls. And, she said she wasn’t going to let them out until they satisfied her.

What I took this to mean was that she was going to make them see the error of their ways. She was going to force-feed them propaganda until they loved magical girls. That would have been pretty entertaining to watch. But, I have to admit that what we got was even better.

Toward the end of the episode, Baiser agreed to go to a hotel with Leoparde after they defeat the Lord Squad. Could this lead to a Baiser x Leoparde scene similar to Loco Musica x Leberblume? I hope so. But, I’m still not sure that it will be better.

Lord Enorme’s Ability

Okay, so we still don’t exactly know what Lord Enorme’s ability entails. But, we know that she can produce an army of infinitely-respawning blob monsters. Leoparde compares this to Baiser’s ability since Baiser also creates monsters. But, these two abilities seem pretty different, to me.

Baiser turns inanimate objects into monsters that bind her enemies. But, Lord’s monsters aren’t so specific. It doesn’t look like she has to rely on anything around her to produce them. She can simply produce them from her own energy. And, they’re generalist monsters that attack, get destroyed, and respawn infinitely.

Lord controls an immortal army while Baiser only controls a few underlings. The scale of their abilities isn’t even remotely similar. And, again, if there are no objects for Baiser to turn into monsters, she can’t do much. What’s she going to turn into a monster within the Nacht Base?

Lord Enorme using her ability from the anime series Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 10
Lord Enorme using her ability

In this episode, we also get confirmation of how many stars each of the girls have. We already knew that Nero Alice, Loco Musica, Leberblume, and Sister Gigant have three stars. We also knew that Lord has four. And, we thought we knew that Leoparde had zero — more on that in the next section.

But, the big confirmation we got from this episode is that Baiser only has two. In my review of Episode 8, I was questioning how many she had. She has one under each eye, one on each horn, and an additional four when she goes into her crazed mode.

Well, now we know she only has two stars as a baseline. That means the stars on her horns don’t count. But, it also likely means that she can have up to six. With that power, she should be able to defeat Lord.

Leoparde’s Stars

I’m not going to call Leoparde’s revealed number of stars a confirmation. It didn’t confirm anything — it contradicts the information we previously had. And, for now, we don’t know why that is. Was she hiding the fact that she had three stars? Or, did she only just acquire them?

It’s entirely possible that Leoparde had three stars all along. They’re located on her chest, which I don’t think we’ve seen before. Leoparde’s outfit covers her chest. And, from what I can remember, we’ve never seen her topless before. So, they could have been there the whole time.

The other option is that Leoparde only recently awakened her stars. She may have done this through a training arc that we didn’t see. After all, I’m sure she was embarrassed when the Lord Squad pointed out she was the only one without any stars.

Leoparde revealing her stars from the anime series Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 10
Leoparde revealing her stars

Or, she may have awakened her stars right here in this fight against Sister Gigant. We don’t know which is the case. But, I’m hoping that we’ll get more information about it in the next few episodes. At the very least, I assume we’ll find out when Baiser returns from defeating Lord.

When Leoparde reveals her stars, something else happens that we haven’t seen before. Her stars light up and she transforms into a new form. Her new form has cat ears and claws made of smoke — giving the impression that her ability has changed. She’s no longer fighting with guns.

Is this kind of transformation something all of the girls can go through? Is it the same as when Baiser’s stars multiply? And, will it alter the ability of anyone who undergoes the transformation? If that’s the case, it can spice things up without the need to add more characters.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 10? After seeing Loco Musica x Leberblume, which pairing of girls do you want to see next? Do you think Lord Enorme really only has four stars? And, what are your thoughts on Leoparde’s new transformation?
