Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 8

Irumyuui’s Wish

Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 8 was definitely something. It confirmed some of my theories. But, it also disproved others. The biggest theory it disproved was that Irumyuui and Faputa are one and the same — they are not.

I’ll get into Faputa more later on. For now, let’s start with something I did correctly predict. In fairness, this seemed pretty obvious. But, as expected, Wazukyan healed his sick followers by feeding them Irumyuui’s offspring. We don’t know why this worked and I’m sure we never will.

What’s important to note from this is that saving the Ganja Party wasn’t Irumyuui’s wish. Irumyuui’s wish was either to be a mother or to have babies. Wazukyan took Irumyuui’s wish away from her to save his followers. Then, once Irumyuui could no longer communicate, he forced his own wish on her.

It’s not explicitly stated that Wazukyan forced his wish on Irumyuui. But, it’s implied. The first piece of evidence for this is that Wazukyan gave Irumyuui a second (and third) Cradle of Desire. He says he did this to keep Irumyuui alive and producing offspring when she was dying.

The second piece of evidence is that Wazukyan used a Cradle of Desire himself. To me, this means that he made a wish using the egg and then implanted the egg into Irumyuui. This first wish would have been for her to continue living and producing children.

Finally, Irumyuui herself becomes the city of Iruburu. We know this isn’t what she wanted, hence why Faputa was born. But, we also know it’s something Wazukyan wanted. So, I’m guessing the third Cradle of Desire was what led to this final outcome. It was all Wazukyan.

Final Pilgrimage of the Ganja Party

Once she becomes large enough, Irumyuui seeks out her final resting place. She heads toward the center of the Abyss and the Ganja Party follows her as their Queen. Once she reaches her desired location, she becomes what we know as Iruburu.

This final transformation of Irumyuui explains a lot of things. We now know how the Ganja Party became Hollows. We know why they can’t leave Iruburu (though, we technically knew this already). And we know what the creatures that carry out the Balancing are.

All three of these things work together to create the full picture of Iruburu and its residents. When someone enters Irumyuui’s body and gives up on their goals and dreams, they get Balanced. Their dreams and their body get turned into value and all that remains is a Hollow.

Once the Balancing occurs, the Hollow can no longer leave Iruburu. They paid their value to live there forever. And speaking of the Balancing, the creatures that perform this are part of Irumyuui. They’re the souls of all her children that died or never had the chance to be born.

Now, that’s all great information to have. But, I know the question you’re really here to have answered. What happened to Vueko’s lover?

You may have glossed over this line from Episode 7‘s review, but I mentioned that Vueko is a lesbian. The anime cut a panel from chapter 49 of the manga that shows her having sex with a female member of the Ganja Party.

Well, when the flying beast killed Eilu, I first thought Eilu was the girl Vueko had sex with. Luckily for Vueko, that’s not the case. Unluckily, her girlfriend is now a pink cyclops living in Iruburu. This episode shows us her Hollow form.

The Birth of Faputa

Okay, so we now know that Irumyuui and Faputa aren’t the same person. To some of you, that may have always seemed obvious because they have different names. But, the fact that they have different names doesn’t have to mean they’re different people.

In the time since the Ganja Party first arrived in the Sixth Layer, they’ve developed a new language. Most of the Hollows don’t speak human languages anymore. So, it would have made sense if Faputa was Irumyuui’s new name in this new language developed by the Hollows.

Anyway, none of that matters now. What matters is that Faputa is Irumyuui’s last child, her only child to survive, and her vector for revenge. Faputa was born for one reason: To destroy Iruburu and kill those who stole Irumyuui’s wish from her. I wonder if the Hollows know all this. They refer to her as their princess.

So, what about Faputa’s promise with Reg? Well, Faputa is unable to cross through the barrier to get into Iruburu. Reg, however, can cross through the barrier. So, their deal seems to be for Reg to either destroy Iruburu or destroy the barrier so Faputa can enter.

Jumping back to the start of the episode, there’s one thing I don’t understand. Faputa tears off a piece of herself as payment to get Reg’s help. We see that her ear is torn off. But, she’s holding a torn-off arm in her hands. Did anyone else find this odd? Maybe I misunderstood what I saw.

And, to close out this section, let’s take a look at something Vueko says about Faputa. She says she hopes Faputa can find her own wish and set out on a joyful journey. Is Faputa joining Team Riko?

Conclusion

What do you think of Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 8? Did Wazukyan really use a wish to force Irumyuui into becoming Iruburu? Was Eilu your favorite Ganja Party member? And do you think Faputa will join Riko’s party? Let me know in the comments.
