Just (Gay) Girls Being (Gay) Girls

Shoujo Sect (少女セクト) is an 18+ shoujo ai series. And by 18+, I mean it’s a hentai. But, I actually didn’t know it was a hentai when I added the manga to my list. I thought it was simply erotica, like Citrus.

You can imagine my surprise when, very quickly, I discovered my mistake. However, the Shoujo Sect manga is very short — only 16 chapters. So, I figured I’d continue reading it and then watch the anime adaptation, as well. That’s right, today’s review is a double feature.

Since the manga is short, the anime is too. It’s a three-episode OVA called Shoujo Sect: Innocent Lovers. Why did they add a subtitle onto the OVA? I’m not sure. I guess it’s to make it easier to differentiate between the anime and manga when searching online.

Anyway, let’s get into the main premise of the series. There are girls at an all-girls school. And, guess what? All the girls at this all-girls school are gay — even the one teacher who makes an appearance. What a great and original idea.

Okay, so as I said, I first read the manga version of the series. It was pretty decent. The sex scenes are good, which as you might expect, is important for a series like this. But, I found it pretty hard to keep track of the characters. I still don’t know who the dark-haired girl on the cover of Volume 1 is supposed to be.

The anime fixed this issue with the manga. It was way easier to understand who was who when everything was in color. And, I’d say that the sex scenes are even better in the anime. You know, because the anime adds movement and sound into the mix.

Momoko vs. Shinobu

There’s a bit more to this yuri series than “girls being girls.” It also has quite a bit of drama and a shockingly complex web of interpersonal relationships. This web has two centers: Momoko Naitou and Shinobu Handa. They’re the ones who everyone else is connected to.

Alright, let’s begin untangling the web. Shinobu and Momoko were childhood friends. Now that they’re in high school, Shinobu has a crush on Momoko. However, Momoko doesn’t remember Shinobu from their childhood. This is the start of the drama.

To make up for the lack of affection she’s receiving from Momoko, Shinobu starts her own harem. You know, as you do. The first girl in Shinobu’s harem is Kirin Suwabe, a dark-skinned girl who offers to be Shinobu’s maid. Then, Shinobu and Kirin bring Maya Enjouji into the fold, creating a three-way relationship.

Momoko Naitou and Hayato Kyouko kissing

Momoko’s side of the web is a bit more monogamous. But, it’s also the side that’s more taboo. Momoko is in a relationship with her teacher, Hayato Kyouko. That’s a spicy relationship right there, but it’s not all. Momoko’s friend, Chizuru Komai, has a crush on her older sister, Shigure. And, thanks to Momoko, the two of them get together.

There are some other minor characters whose names I don’t remember, as well. For example, I think there’s a pair of twins who have something going on with Maya. But, those are all the main characters.

With that said, there’s one more character I need to mention. Sayuri Ookami is a third-year student who I only think comes into the series toward the end. She wants to make Shinobu hers — she doesn’t want to join Shinobu’s harem. And, she’s the reason why the two sides of the web come back together.

The Best Part of the Manga

There was one thing that the manga did infinitely better than the anime. But, before I get to it, I need to do a little build-up.

If Momoko is in a relationship with Hayato, how does she reconnect with Shinobu? Well, after Momoko and Hayato spend a night together, Hayato coughs up blood, collapses, and is out of the picture. She doesn’t die. However, she’s no longer around and that leaves Momoko all alone.

It’s around this time that Momoko begins to remember who Shinobu is.

Now, let’s bring Sayuri, the upperclassman, into the story. Sayuri traps Shinobu in a room and sexually assaults her. Momoko discovers this happening and saves Shinobu by sending Sayuri away. And then, it happens. Momoko snaps — and this is the single best scene of the entire series (in the manga).

Momoko Naitou hitting Sayuri Ookami with a fire extinguisher from the manga Shoujo Sect
Momoko Naitou hitting Sayuri Ookami with a fire extinguisher

After catching Sayuri assaulting Shinobu, Momoko couldn’t let Sayuri walk away. She grabs a fire extinguisher and uses it to bash Sayuri in the head, in a scene I never saw coming. I guess Momoko had a lot of pent-up anger after losing her older lover and seeing her childhood friend hurt.

Okay, but how did the anime ruin this iconic scene? I guess the team working on the OVA didn’t think Momoko’s attempted murder of Sayuri was very hot. They wanted their adaptation to be sexy, not crazy. So, instead of using a fire extinguisher, Momoko only punches Sayuri in the face.

Since I watched the anime right after reading the manga, I was looking forward to this scene. The plot of this series isn’t good — as you can likely tell from how I’ve described it in this review. It’s a hentai plot. But, that scene made all the drama worth it.

Final Thoughts

I ended up giving the Shoujo Sect manga a 6/10 and the anime a 7/10. Despite altering the best scene and making it worse than it was in the manga, the anime is still better (read: hotter). As a whole, though, I enjoyed Shoujo Sect. It’s a nice yuri series.

Eroge! H mo Game mo Kaihatsu Zanmai

Eroge! H mo Game mo Kaihatsu Zanmai

Saving a Failing Game Developer

Eroge! H mo Game mo Kaihatsu Zanmai is a 6-episode OVA about a small game company called Flower. It aired between 2011 and 2016. And, I believe this is the third anime I’ve reviewed about making video games.

The first similar anime I reviewed is New Game!, which has the most in common with Eroge! Both series are about all-female development companies. But, Eagle Jump (the company in New Game) is larger and more successful than Eroge!’s Flower. Other than that, though, they’re pretty much the same series.

After New Game!, I reviewed Saekano, which is one of my favorite anime. Unlike Eroge! and New Game!, Saekano is about high school students developing a game. But, where Saekano is more similar to Eroge! is in the genre of the game being made. New Game! is about making an RPG. Eroge! and Saekano are about making dating simulators.

Iori, Kisara, and Momoka

So, I mentioned that the game company Flower isn’t very successful. That’s because their first game flopped. They barely sold any copies and, as a result, can’t pay their employee’s salaries. But, the president of the company has an idea. And no, it’s not filing for bankruptcy.

Only failures file for bankruptcy. Flower isn’t a failure. They just need a little help. That’s why the president hired a new employee with extensive dating sim experience. But, when I say extensive experience, I mean experience playing games, not making them.

Why would the president do that, though? Well, the current employees of Flower are actually good at their jobs. The real issue is that none of them have experience playing dating sims. How are they supposed to make a fun game if they’ve never played one before? That’s where the new employee comes in.

Flower Staff

Tomoya Mochizuki is the protagonist of the series and professional dating sim player. He doesn’t actually bring any other experience to Flower. Basically, he’s a glorified play-tester. But, his presence does shake things up at the company which was once entirely comprised of women.

Kisara Himeno is one of the three main girls. I’d argue she’s the female lead as she’s the one who gets the most character development. Kisara is one of two artists at Flower and specializes in line art. She’s also a tsundere, which makes her the cutest of the girls.

Momoka Fujiwara is the next main girl. She’s the script writer for Flower and she writes BL doujinshi in her spare time. While I do prefer Kisara’s appearance and personality, Momoka is the girl I would choose. She’s more adventurous, which makes her more fun.

Tomoya, Iori, and Reina on the beach from the anime OVA Eroge! H mo Game mo Kaihatsu Zanmai
Tomoya, Iori, and Reina on the beach

Iori Kousaka is easily the worst girl of the series. She’s also the third main girl and works as the second artist specializing in coloring. But, what makes Iori so bad? First, there’s her sense of style. She wears a skirt over jeans — who does that? And second, she’s a bit too adventurous.

Nene Sonono is the president of Flower. Despite her appearance (she looks like a child), she’s actually in her 30s. Nene could have been a decent character. But, she doesn’t get as much screen time as the others. And, as a result, her character never gets any development.

The final character I want to mention is Reina Otori. We’re never actually told what Reina’s role at Flower is. But, she doesn’t work in the office with the rest of the employees. From my understanding, Reina is the owner of the company. She also appears to have money, despite Flower’s situation.

There’s No Replacement for Experience

Thanks to Tomoya, Flower’s second game is a resounding success. It’s amazing what a little experience can do. However, that doesn’t mean we should praise Nene for hiring Tomoya. Her gamble paid off, sure. But, who caused the problem in the first place?

As the president of Flower, the blame probably lies with Nene. To me, it seems like Flower’s main issue is poor management. Why did they develop a dating sim when none of the employees had ever played one before? That seems like a recipe for disaster — and it was.

With that said, I can’t say for certain that Nene was the problem. Based on Reina’s personality, it’s possible that she pushed Flower in that direction. I can definitely see her deciding that a dating sim is the way to go and not listening to any feedback.

Nene handing out trial copies of Flower's new game from the anime OVA Eroge! H mo Game mo Kaihatsu Zanmai
Nene handing out trial copies of Flower’s new game

Something else to keep in mind is that Tomoya wasn’t the worst possible hire for the position. He actually wants to make Flower’s next game a success. And he’s willing to put in the effort to ensure that happens. He’s more than a dating sim snob like Keima from The World God Only Knows.

At the end of the series, the employees of Flower go on a trip to an onsen to generate ideas for their next game. Unfortunately, we’ll never get to see what that next game looks like. I don’t see there ever being a true sequel to this series.

But, there is another OVA called Ero Manga! H mo Manga mo Step-up♪ from the same creator. From my understanding, it’s the same idea but with mangaka instead of game developers. So, maybe I’ll have to review that one in the future.

Conclusion

I ended up giving Eroge! H mo Game mo Kaihatsu Zanmai a 7/10. It’s a good series with at least two likable girls. But, I feel that it could have been even better if Iori wasn’t in it. Replace Iori with Remon Aizawa (a voice actor who appears once) and it could have been an 8.

Shoujo Ramune

Shoujo Ramune

OVA Overview

Shoujo Ramune (小女ラムネ) is a 4-episode slice of life anime OVA that released episodes between October 2016 and March 2018. The episodes average out to be 19 minutes each. But since they don’t have OPs, that evens out to about the same amount of content as your standard anime episode.

If you’re not already familiar with Shoujo Ramune, you might be familiar with a similar series, Non Non Biyori. Just like Non Non Biyori, Shoujo Ramune follows the daily lives of some elementary or middle school girls who live in middle-of-nowhere, Japan.

However, as an OVA, Shoujo Ramune is much smaller in scope. Maybe 90% of the OVA takes place at a small candy shop on a lonely stretch of road in the mountains. Basically, just imagine the candy shop from Non Non Biyori, but with a middle-aged man running it instead of a 20-something-year-old girl.

When you consider that this candy shop doesn’t seem to get any business besides the three main girls of the series, it’s hard to believe that it’s successful enough to stay open. And, it’s not even like these girls are big spenders. In the first episode, two of them share a single popsicle.

Anyway, the girls have a special relationship with the owner of the candy shop. Besides each other, he’s basically their only friend. They spend their free time hanging out around his shop and asking him for advice on anything from relationships to making it big as an idol.

In some senses, Shoujo Ramune is also like Mitsuboshi Colors. Both have 3 young girls and both have an older man who runs a store and entertains the girls. But the setting is completely different and Shoujo Ramune isn’t a comedy.

Characters

There are only five characters in Shoujo Ramune. So, let’s start this section by going over the main girls. They are Komako Semenovich, Chie Sayama, and Tenka Adachi. Of these three, Komako is easily my favorite both in terms of her character design and personality.

Komako has pale skin, white hair that’s put up into twin tails with pink ribbons, and blue eyes. She also wears a white dress. Her personality is very subdued and she speaks in a matter-of-fact way. And because she’s a bit shy, she has the shop owner give her advice on how to be noticed by her crush.

Komako, Chie, and Tenka from the anime OVA Shoujo Ramune
Komako, Chie, and Tenka

Chie wears a blue tank top and a yellow skirt. Her skin tone is on the tanner side and she has visible tan lines. She also has brown hair and brown eyes. Chie’s the most plain of the three personality-wise, but there’s still plenty of good Chie content.

Tenka has the most outgoing personality of the three. And this makes sense considering her dream is to become a popular idol. She has the candy shop owner help her develop an online presence to gain fans. As for her appearance, she has black hair and brown eyes and wears a purple shirt with a green tank top under it paired with purple shorts.

Kiyoshi Tachikawa is the candy shop owner. It’s unclear exactly how old he is, but I’m going to guess that he’s in his 40s because his hair seems to be going a bit grey. Apparently, he opened the candy shop after deciding he wanted to get away from city life.

The final character is Yuuko Sayama, Chie’s mother. Of the five characters, she’s the only one I’d call a supporting character. She also begins dating Kiyoshi partway through the OVA.

From Dreams to Reality

This is the part of the review that goes into spoiler territory. You see, each of the three girls has a dream that they want Kiyoshi to help them achieve. Komako wants her crush to reciprocate her feelings, Chie wants a father, and Tenka wants to become the greatest idol.

By the end of the 4 episodes, each of these girls had made major steps toward their dreams — with the help of Kiyoshi, of course. So, let’s start with Chie’s dream because it’s the one that Kiyoshi has the most direct impact on.

Early on, Chie mentions how she wishes Kiyoshi was her dad because she likes him. And as I mentioned, Kiyoshi does end up dating Chie’s mom later on. Once they start dating, he even tells Chie that she can call him her dad now, but she says that she’s going to keep calling him “old man” because that’s what she’s used to.

Tenka Adachi's idol debut from the anime OVA Shoujo Ramune
Tenka Adachi’s idol debut

Technically, by the end of the OVA, Kiyoshi isn’t Chie’s stepdad. So her dream wasn’t completely achieved. But, the same isn’t true for Komako. Her dream of having her crush reciprocate her feelings came true thanks to Kiyoshi’s advice. She got to spend one-on-one time with her crush during the summer festival.

Lastly, there’s Tenka’s dream of becoming an idol. While Kiyoshi did attempt to help Tenka grow an online audience, that’s not really how he helped her with her dream. Instead, he helped by giving her the confidence she needed to be able to get up on stage and perform in front of people.

Also, while Tenka doesn’t become a successful idol by the end of the OVA, she does make her debut in a small competition. And, of course, Chie, Komako, Kiyoshi, and Yuuko show up to support her.

Conclusion

Shoujo Ramune is a 7/10 from me. All three of the main girls are good, which is the thing that matters the most in an anime like this. There’s a lot of great content involving them, especially during the portions of the episodes that focus on each girl individually.

I also want to finish off this review with a fun fact that I learned while writing this. As you may know, ramune (ラムネ) from the title is a kind of lemon-flavored soda in Japan. Well, what I never put together is that ramune comes from the English word “lemonade.” The more you know.

Kanojo x Kanojo x Kanojo

Kanojo x Kanojo x Kanojo

Series Overview

Kanojo x Kanojo x Kanojo: Exciting Life With Three Sisters (Kanojo x Kanojo x Kanojo: Sanshimai to no DokiDoki Kyoudou Seikatsu / 彼女×彼女×彼女~三姉妹とのドキドキ共同生活~) is a slice of life romance series of the harem variety. It’s an OVA series consisting of three episodes.

The series follows Haruomi Shiki, a high school student who’s forced to evacuate from his hometown due to a volcanic eruption. As a result, he ends up living with his childhood friends, the Orifushi sisters, who have a spare room due to the death of their father some time prior.

Upon his passing, Mr. Orifushi left his business, MinMin Ice Cream, to his children. MinMin is a small shop, more of a stand really, that has been on the decline ever since Natsumi, the eldest Orifushi daughter, took over the day-to-day operations.

Now that Haruomi is in the picture, he’s determined to help the Orifushi sisters revitalize their father’s ice cream shop. But the arrival of a much larger competitor, 101 Ice Cream, just across the street from MinMin isn’t going to make things easy.

Ultimately, it’s going to take the combined effort of the Orifushi sisters, Haruomi, and a few of Haruomi’s classmates if MinMin is going to stand a chance of survival. And, that’s one of my favorite things about this series.

Kanojo x Kanojo x Kanojo isn’t simply a harem series in which various girls fall for our hero. Nearly every character has a role to play in restoring MinMin to its former glory. I won’t say they’re all relevant to the story, but even the one who isn’t is still a unique enough character for her inclusion in the anime to be worthwhile.

Main and Supporting Cast

From the overview section, you know basically all there is to know about Haruomi. The only extra piece of trivia I have for you regarding him here is that the “Haru” in his name means spring. Why is this important? Because the Orifushi sisters are named after the other three seasons.

Natsumi is the eldest of the Orifushi sisters. We don’t have an actual age for her — or any of the characters for that matter. But I’m going to assume she’s in her early 20s. She’s out of high school and works at MinMin full time, where she apparently drinks Bacardi Black rum while on the job.

Akina is the middle Orifushi sister and is in the same high school class as Haruomi. Honestly, I think Akina is the least interesting of all the girls. She’s basically just the vanilla option. And while vanilla is nice sometimes, it’s never been my first choice when it comes to ice cream.

Akina, Midori, and Suzu from the Kanojo x Kanojo x Kanojo anime OVA
Akina, Midori, and Suzu

Mafuyu is the youngest Orifushi sister as well as the best character in the entire series. Not only is she simply the cutest, but she’s the most complex. She’s a quiet middle schooler who enjoys reading. And while it may not seem like she’s that interested in helping out with MinMin, she often indirectly leads Haruomi to solutions.

Midori Byakudan might be my second favorite girl after Mafuyu. She’s the class president and one of Akina’s friends. She ends up helping out Haruomi by translating recipe notes that Mr. Orifushi had written in English before his passing.

Suzuran “Suzu” Himenohara is the wildcard of the series. I can’t actually think of any way she helped with the whole MinMin situation. But, since you never know what kind of antics Suzu is going to be up to, she’s one of the more interesting characters in the series.

Does Hard Work Pay Off?

Now, I’ve included a few spoilers for the series already in this review. But this is where I’m going to get into endgame spoiler content. Does the hard work that Haruomi and the girls (except Suzu) put into MinMin pay off?

Normally, you’d expect the answer to be yes — unless this was the first season of a Love Live! series. However, rather surprisingly, all of this hard work actually doesn’t pay off. Well, at least not in the way you would expect it to.

You see, there’s an ice cream competition that both MinMin and 101 enter. And throughout the course of the series, everyone is doing their share to come up with the perfect flavor for MinMin, which turns out to be a lavender flavor. But in the end, MinMin actually loses the competition despite everyone’s best efforts.

Natsumi Orifushi from the Kanojo x Kanojo x Kanojo anime OVA
Natsumi Orifushi

So, does this mean that MinMin failed as a business and had to shut down? Well, no. And this is the part of the anime I don’t like all that much. 101 actually closes its doors — at least of that location, it’s a chain — before it even officially opens them.

You see, it turns out that one of the board members of 101 actually used to work at MinMin under Mr. Orifushi. And after tasting MinMin’s lavender flavor, he realizes that he made a mistake when he left to work at 101.

I know that having MinMin win the competition in the end thanks to all their hard work would have been as generic of an ending as it gets. But at the same time, the actual ending is extremely unsatisfying. It’s almost like nothing that was accomplished throughout the series mattered.

At least it was thanks to the lavender ice cream that 101 closed and MinMin survived. But winning because the competition forfeits isn’t how anyone wants to win.

Conclusion

I’m actually very conflicted about my rating of this series. On one hand, I love it. It’s probably the anime I’ve rewatched the most amount of times. But on the other, it’s very generic. So, with that said, I guess I have to give it a 7/10. I might come back and bump it up to an 8 later. We’ll see.
