Defeating Ibara

Dr. Stone: New World Part 2 is the second cour of the third season of the Dr. Stone series. I remember a few years ago when having a two-cour season split into Part 1 and Part 2 was unheard of. Now it’s the norm.

Anyway, this “season” (cour) of Dr. Stone has me back to thinking that the series isn’t good. For some reason, I thought New World Part 1 was fine and even rated Ryusui as good. Both the original season and Stone Wars were only average.

New World Part 2 is the first part of the series I’ve rated as bad. But, why is that? Well, to me, the biggest issue is that the villains of this part weren’t very interesting. And when I say the villains, I’m referring to Ibara, Mozu, and Kirisame.

Ibara with the petrification device from the anime series Dr. Stone: New World Part 2
Ibara with the petrification device

Let’s go through them in reverse order. Kirisame is the least interesting of the villains because she doesn’t have any goals. She’s a powerful warrior and the one who carries the petrification device. But, she just follows Ibara’s orders. She has no motivations and her character doesn’t have much depth.

Mozu is better in that he has personal a personal motivation. He works under Ibara. But, he also has the goal of overthrowing Ibara and becoming the king of the island. That makes him pretty decent as an antagonist. Well, except for the fact that he’s yet another “super strong and smart” enemy — like Tsukasa and Hyouga.

As the primary antagonist, Ibara should be the best of the villains. He’s not. Mozu is better. And the reason is that Ibara is kind of evil for the sake of it. He just wants power and wealth for himself and that’s it.

The Power of Petrification

In this season, Senku’s primary goal was to obtain the power of petrification. And, in the end, he succeeds in doing that. But, why did he want that power, in the first place? There are a few reasons. However, one stands above the rest.

Obviously, one reason is that having a weapon like the petrification device is good. It would make the Kingdom of Science stronger. But, we know Senku doesn’t care too much about having weapons like that. So, a better reason is that if the Kingdom of Science has it, their enemies don’t.

But, the main reason is that the petrification device can heal all wounds. If someone suffers a major injury, you can petrify them to stop them from dying. And when you free them from the petrification, their injury will be healed.

Senku wanted the power of petrification so he could use it to save Tsukasa.

Senku being petrified from the anime series Dr. Stone: New World Part 2
Senku being petrified

However, there’s a flaw with the Kingdom of Science having the petrification device. If they can heal anyone, where’s the suspense? Any time they’d attempt something dangerous, we’d know that there’s no real threat. Did someone get stabbed? Petrify and heal them. Problem solved.

Of course, we know none of the characters are going to die anyway. This isn’t the kind of series to do that. But, it’s different when we know that there’s an in-universe reason why they’re not going to die. It just makes everything less interesting.

That’s exactly why the Kingdom of Science no longer has the power of petrification. They got to use it to revive everyone after the events on Treasure Island. And they got to use it on Tsukasa. Then, the power ran out. So, unless they figure out how to charge it, they can’t use it again.

Taking A Trip to the Moon

All the major players in the Kingdom of Science are back. And by that, I mean both Hyouga and Tsukasa are back. I think those were the only two major characters who were out of commission. But, with them here, it’s time to move on to the next adventure!

Senku and the gang have determined where the Why Man’s signal is coming from: The moon. And, to back this up, one of the people they revived told them an interesting story from the past. The last thing Matsukaze remembers is petrification devices rained down from the sky.

So, the Kingdom of Science’s next move seems pretty clear. They need to go to the moon and confront the Why Man. Or, at least, go to the moon and figure out what’s going on up there. We really don’t know anything about the Why Man or what they’re trying to accomplish.

Hyouga revived again from the anime series Dr. Stone: New World Part 2
Hyouga revived again

Well, there is one other thing I should mention about the Why Man. At one point, a signal from the Why Man comes over the radio and attempts to activate the petrification device. It doesn’t work. But, that shows the Why Man’s intent to petrify the surviving humans, right?

Not so fast. Let’s not jump to that conclusion. You see, the Why Man didn’t exactly try to activate the device. Instead, the signal coming from the Why Man was a recording of Senku. It was a recording of when Senku tried to activate the device via radio against Ibara.

So, that’s interesting. If the Why Man wanted to activate the device, why use a recording of Senku? Why not say the command themself? Does the Why Man even exist? Could it be a radio station on the moon that’s merely mimicking signals it receives?

Final Thoughts

Dr. Stone: New World Part 2 is a 4/10. It’s bad. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t like it or have fun watching it. I like plenty of anime other people think are bad. I even like anime that I think are bad. But, the plot, characters, and overall writing of this season were not good.

Overtake! Review

Overtake! Review

Overtake! anime series cover art
Overtake!

Possibly the Best Racing Anime (So Far)

Overtake! (オーバーテイク!) might be the best racing anime around. Though, to be fair, I haven’t watched many racing anime. It might only be this and Two Car. So, yeah, I get that there are a lot of other racing anime I haven’t seen.

MF Ghost is another racing anime that aired alongside Overtake! I know a lot of people said that was good. But, I didn’t watch it because it didn’t look all that good, to me. Nothing about the PV or OP made me think it would be any better than Overtake!

Of course, if you’re talking racing anime, you have to mention Initial D. Maybe I’ll watch it one day. However, I haven’t felt the desire to do so yet.

But, why was I interested in Overtake and not MF Ghost or Initial D? It’s formula racing.

Kouya watching Koutarou and Haruka push their F4 car from the anime series Overtake!
Kouya watching Koutarou and Haruka push their F4 car

Overtake! is a Formula 4 (F4) anime. You might be familiar with Formula 1 (F1). Well, F4 is like the baby version of F1. Below F1 is F2, then F3, and finally F4. It’s a step above karting. But, it’s still formula racing, which is a kind of open-wheeled racing.

I like a variety of types of racing. But, F1 is my favorite. I’ve been watching F1 since 2012 and I’ve been to a few races. So, when I saw Overtake! was a formula series anime, I knew I had to watch it.

Unfortunately for Overtake!, there’s a new racing anime with cute girls coming out in the spring. Will Highspeed Etoile be the new best racing anime? I doubt it. I had high hopes when it was announced. But, the most recent PV looks bad. It has choppy CGI animation and everything looks bland other than the character.

More About Characters Than Racing

While Overtake! is definitely a racing anime, racing isn’t the main focus. This is a drama anime, so the characters are what are important. And, we can split the characters into two main categories. There are the drivers and there’s everyone else.

Haruka Asahina is a driver and the protagonist of the series. He drives for Komaki Motors, which is a small, self-funded team. They don’t have any sponsors and they only have three employees, including Haruka. The other two are Futoshi Komaki and his son Koutarou Komaki.

Kouya Madoka is the non-driver main character of the series. He’s a photojournalist who joins Komaki Motors in a pseudo-marketing role. At the start of the series, he knows nothing about racing. And because of that, he serves as the viewer-insert character. As other characters teach him about racing, they’re teaching the viewers, as well.

Satsuki Harunaga sitting in his car from the anime series Overtake!
Satsuki Harunaga sitting in his car

Satsuki Harunaga is one of Haruka’s two rivals. He’s the number one driver for Belsorriso, the top team on the grid. Satsuki is something of a playboy, always being followed around by a hoard of female fans. And, related to that, he wants to emulate his hero, F1 driver James Hunt.

Toshiki Tokumaru is Haruka’s other rival. He’s the second driver for Belsorriso, which makes him and Satsuki teammates as well as rivals. Toshiki wants to become the team’s number one driver and blames Haruka for the fact that he’s not already.

The last character I want to mention is Alice Mitsuzawa. She’s Koutarou Komaki’s childhood friend and crush. But, she also works as a grid girl for Belsorriso because she’s one of Satsuki’s adoring fans. Alice isn’t a very interesting character. However, I like her because she’s cute and she helps along Satsuki’s character development.

One Great Episode

As you’ll see with my final rating of the series at the end of this review, Overtake! is pretty good. But, it has one great episode that stands far above the others. Episode 9 is where the drama of the series reaches its climax.

Throughout the first 8 episodes of the series, we get bits and pieces of information about Kouya’s past. We know he stopped taking portrait photography after an incident. And, later on, we learn that the incident involved a natural disaster and the death of a young girl. But, it doesn’t all come together until Episode 9.

I won’t spoil it any more than that. However, this episode made me realize something important. Overtake! didn’t need to be about racing. The best parts of the series, like this episode, have nothing to do with the racing side of things. It could have been about anything.

Haruka Asahina racing from the anime series Overtake!
Haruka Asahina racing

So, here’s a question. Do you want a drama anime with racing in the background? Or, a racing anime without much in terms of drama and plot? If the former sounds better, watch Overtake! The racing content may not have been necessary, but it’s still pretty decent.

If the latter sounds better, allow me to introduce you to Redline. Earlier in the review when I said Overtake! and Two Car were the only racing anime I’ve watched, I left out Redline. Why? Because it’s less of a racing anime and more nonstop action that resembles racing to an extent.

Look, if we count Redline, then the question of which is the best racing anime has long been decided. But, to me, the drama that series like Overtake! bring to the table is part of being a racing anime. The drama aspect is important for any sports anime.

Final Thoughts

Overtake! is a 6/10 from me. It’s a pretty good anime. Though, I have to admit that Episode 9 did a lot of the heavy lifting. And, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the ending. But, it was good enough. So, basically, I felt the same about Overtake as I feel about most sports anime.

BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!! Review

BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!! Review

BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!! anime series cover art
BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!!

Why Is This Anime Rated So High?

BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!! (バンドリ!It’s MyGO!!!!!) is an extremely overrated anime. MyAnimeList would have you believe it’s an 8.24/10. It’s more like a 2/10. And in this review, I’m going to explain why that is so you don’t get tricked into watching it.

Let’s get the high rating out of the way. Why is this anime rated so high? Well, it all has to do with the number of people who rated it. Only 6,000 people have watched and rated this series on MAL. Why does that matter, though?

Well, with so few people rating the series, that tells me these are diehard Bandori fans. The majority of people who watched It’s MYGO!!!!! have probably watched all the other seasons, too. So, that weeds out most people who would rate this series lower. Most viewers wouldn’t make it this far into the series, or wouldn’t start here.

Anon Chihaya practicing the guitar from the anime series BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!!
Anon Chihaya practicing the guitar

Why is It’s MyGO!!!!! bad, though? Pretty much everything about it is the problem. There’s the CGI animation, the characters, the unnecessary drama, the dialogue, everything.

Let’s start with the animation. CGI is a divisive topic. I don’t like CGI animation in anime. But, that doesn’t stop me from watching a series. The CGI isn’t that bad in It’s MyGO!!!!! However, it would be better if it wasn’t CGI.

While watching this series, I couldn’t stop staring at the physics-defying hairstyles. I’m sure hair in most anime isn’t much better. But, in most anime, it doesn’t draw my attention to it. It was hard not to notice it here.

The characters, drama, and dialogue are what I want to focus on for the rest of this review. I don’t like to say that people are bad at their jobs. But, what were the writers of this series thinking?

Every Band Member Is Annoying

I guess before I get into the band members, I should mention their band name. For most of the series, they don’t have one. They then decide on Maigo Band before Anon changes it to It’s MyGO!!!!!, which is a terrible name.

Speaking of Anon Chihaya, she’s the protagonist of the series. Anon is an absolute narcissist who wants to be the lead singer and guitarist of the band. However, she can neither sing nor play the guitar. Of course, she lies and claims she can do those things and more.

Tomori Takamatsu is the actual singer and lyricist of the band. She collects rocks and animal bandaids, has very poor social skills, and can’t cope with change. Unfortunately, this leads to the other characters treating her like a child and speaking for her frequently.

Anon, Tomori, Soyo, Raana, and Taki in the studio from the anime series BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!!
Anon, Tomori, Soyo, Raana, and Taki in the studio

Soyo Nagasaki is almost the worst. She’s a rich girl who attends a prestigious school, which is fine. But, she also uses the other members of the band for her own gain and doesn’t think twice about tossing them aside. Specifically, she doesn’t care about Anon or Raana at all and would prefer if they quit the band.

Raana Kaname is the “stray cat” of the band. She has no real connection to any of the others and comes and goes as she pleases. She’s almost incapable of speech, is food-motivated, and has zero self-awareness. Raana isn’t even invited to join the band — she just decides she’s a part of it.

Taki Shiina is, by far, the worst character. I swear that over 50% of her dialogue is an incredulous “Huh?” That seems to be her catchphrase and she says it so frequently that I felt like I was going insane. Who thought that was good dialogue?

Why Is Sakiko A Villain?

Maybe I don’t understand the Bandori series. That’s very possible considering this is the first season of it I’ve watched. But, why was Sakiko Togawa set up as the villain of the series if we were never going to find out anything about her?

In the very first episode, Sakiko quits the band CRYCHIC, causing it to fall apart. We later find out that she was the one who started the band. And, at the end of the series, she forms a new band, Ave Mujica, that seems to be the “antagonist” band.

Like, the whole reason she formed Ave Mujica was to get back at her former bandmates who are now in It’s MyGO!!!!! But, why? Why does she hate the other girls and want them to fail? She was the one who left CRYCHIC. She can’t leave the band then turn around and be mad at the other girls because she left.

Sakiko Togawa from the anime series BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!!
Sakiko Togawa

We never get an answer to this. We also never find out why Mutsumi Wakaba, also a former member of CRYCHIC, joins Ave Mujica. Mutsumi said she never had fun in CRYCHIC. But, that doesn’t explain why she’s in Ave Mujica. And it doesn’t explain why Soyo blames everything on her.

I guess the next season is supposed to explain all of this. It follows Ave Mujica, so I would certainly hope it does. But, I don’t have high hopes. Nothing about Ave Mujica makes sense.

Like, consider the drummer of Ave Mujica, Nyamu Yuutenji. Sakiko specifically scouted her because she was a popular influencer. Sakiko wanted to use Nyamu’s existing audience to boost her new band. And yet, she forbids any of the band members from revealing their identities.

Doesn’t that completely invalidate the whole point of having Nyamu join the band?

Final Thoughts

As I said at the start of this review, I gave BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!! a 2/10. I’m sorry Bandori fans, but this isn’t a good anime; it’s pretty terrible. If you want to watch good music anime, however, there are a lot of options. Bocchi the Rock! and Love Live! come to mind.

If you enjoyed this review, though, remember to share it with everyone you know. Also, follow me on your social media of choice so you don’t miss out on any future articles — links are in the footer.

Otaku Elf Review

Otaku Elf Review

Otaku Elf anime series cover art
Otaku Elf

The Goddess From Another World

Otaku Elf (Edomae Elf / 江戸前エルフ) is a comedy, slice of life series about an elf summoned as a goddess into our world. 400 years ago, Tokugawa Ieyasu summoned Elda from another world. Since then, she’s been the enshrined deity of the Takamimi Shrine in Tokyo.

But, Elda doesn’t have any particularly special powers. She can’t grant wishes or make miracles happen. The only thing she can do is have spirits relay messages to her Miko, Koito Koganei. And, these messages tend to be Elda asking Koito to buy her things, like limited edition figures.

Yes, as you likely guessed from the (English) title of the series, Elda is a complete otaku. And, I don’t mean she’s an otaku as many people in the West understand it. It’s not like she’s only obsessed with anime. She devotes all her time to her interests to the detriment of her social skills.

Elda, Goddess of Red Bull from the anime series Otaku Elf
Elda, Goddess of Red Bull

Elda loves anime, collectible figures, manga, Japanese history, Japanese culture, and more. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s also one of those people obsessed with Japanese trains. As I said, she’s a full-blown otaku. And, her “condition” goes beyond that.

Usually, having sub-par social skills is part of being an otaku. Well, Elda is a hikikomori (shut-in). She rarely ever leaves the inner shrine of the Takamimi Shrine. And when she does, it tends to be at night and she wears a disguise. She can’t even interact with the people delivering the stuff she orders online.

But, there are reasons as to why Elda is this way. I’ll discuss more of them later in the review. However, right now, I want to point out that Elda’s love of Japanese history and culture makes sense. After all, she’s lived through and experienced 400 years of it.

Takamimi, Hiromimi, and Uramimi

Elda is the enshrined deity of the Takamimi Shrine. But, she’s not the only elf enshrined as a deity in a Japanese shrine. There are two others we know of who were summoned into our world around the same time as Elda.

The first one we meet is Yolde of the Hiromimi Shrine. Yolde is a dark elf, which just means that she has darker skin than Elda. She also has a very child-like appearance and personality, despite not being a child. She’s a year older than Elda. But, it’s unclear if her appearance has to do with her being a dark elf.

Yolde’s personality is also the opposite of Elda’s. She’s very outgoing, interacts with her parishioners, and enjoys traveling. And, because of this, she and Elda view each other as rivals. Well, and the fact that Toyotomi Hideyoshi, rival of Tokugawa Ieyasu, summoned Yolde.

Yolde of the Hiromimi Shrine from the anime series Otaku Elf
Yolde of the Hiromimi Shrine

Haira of the Uramimi Shrine is the third and final enshrined deity (elf). She looks very similar to Elda and is the oldest of the three. Haira’s Miko, Izusu Koimari, is an influencer who’s always taking pictures of Haira. Izusu even makes photo books of Haira to capture her beauty.

Of course, Haira isn’t perfect; she has a personality defect of her own. Elda is a hikikomori, Yolde is a dumb “kid,” and Haira has a gambling addiction. She spends all her money betting on races of various kinds or buying lottery tickets.

So, who’s the best enshrined deity (elf)? It may seem obvious, but Elda is the best one. She’s the most entertaining. Yolde is very annoying, so I’m ranking her last. And, I’m indifferent toward Haira, so she’s the second-best by default. Honestly, I wouldn’t have minded if these other elves just weren’t in the series.

Immortal Otaku

Alright. So, earlier in this review, I mentioned that there are reasons why Elda is the way she is. Why did she become a shut-in who doesn’t want to interact with most people? The reason only came up twice in the series: Elda is immortal.

From the stories she tells, we know Elda wasn’t always a hikikomori. She used to go out. And when she was first summoned (400 years ago), she lived a pretty normal life. But, the perk of being immortal comes with a serious drawback. Everyone she meets dies.

Well, everyone except Yolde and Haira.

So, why did Elda become a shut-in? It’s not for the reason she says, that kids made fun of her ears. It’s because she doesn’t want to get close to people only for them to die. If you’re watching Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End right now, this should be familiar to you.

Elda using her laptop from the anime series Otaku Elf
Elda using her laptop

This was, by far, the most interesting thing in the series. That’s not surprising considering it was primarily a slice of life anime. But, what’s unfortunate is that it wasn’t explored very much. Koito recognizes that this is why Elda is a hikikomori and then doesn’t pry further.

Now, Koito tries to get Elda comfortable with interacting with more people. So, she’s doing her part in that sense. But, I still would have liked to learn more about specific people from Elda’s past. Or, the series could have gone more in the other direction and explored how people feel about Elda.

That last point was covered a bit. For example, Koito mentions how people like the fact that Elda is an ever-present part of their lives. She’s there when they’re born and she’s still there when they die. And, there’s comfort in knowing that she’ll remember them.

Final Thoughts

I considered giving Otaku Elf a 7. But, the final two episodes of the series were kind of weak. So, I ended up dropping my rating down to 6/10. I enjoyed it, but wouldn’t say it’s a must-watch or anything. And, the best parts of the series were probably the OP and ED.

My Tiny Senpai Review

My Tiny Senpai Review

My Tiny Senpai anime series cover art
My Tiny Senpai

Bland and Uninspired

My Tiny Senpai (Uchi no Kaisha no Chiisai Senpai no Hanashi / うちの会社の小さい先輩の話) is a pretty boring anime. It’s a romantic comedy about an office worker and his tiny senpai. And if that plot sounds familiar, that’s because this isn’t the first series to do it.

Of course, not every anime is going to have an original concept. That’s impossible. But, there’s nothing about this series that makes it stand out. In some ways, it’s even worse than the piles of isekai trash we get every season. At least those try to have an original gimmick, even if they’re still bad.

Fantasy series always need to do something to differentiate themselves. That might mean the protagonist is a vending machine or a slime. Or, it could mean that they come from the boonies or have a smartphone. Whatever the case may be, something is unique about them.

Shiori Katase from the anime series My Tiny Senpai
Shiori Katase

What’s the unique trait of My Tiny Senpai? What’s going to draw viewers to this series over all the other romantic comedies they could watch? I guess it’s that the short girl in this one is the senpai, not the kouhai. But, that technicality doesn’t actually change anything about the series.

Yes, Shiori Katase is Takuma Shinozaki’s senpai. But, most of the time, you wouldn’t know it. Shiori likes to do things she thinks make her look like a dependable senpai. However, the reality is that Takuma is often the one taking care of her.

Shiori loves stuffed animals, cats, and other cute things. That’s not necessarily un-senpai-like. But, the way her love for these things manifests makes it hard to see her as a senpai. She crawls around on the ground, acts like a cat, and gets flustered frequently. She’s more like a large child than a tiny senpai.

Uzaki-chan Meets My Senpai is Annoying

When watching My Tiny Senpai, two other anime came to mind. These are Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out! and My Senpai is Annoying. And, it should be pretty obvious why this series reminds me of those two.

Physically, Shiori and Uzaki are the same. Uzaki has shorter hair. But, they’re both very short and sugoi dekai. And, of course, both series use the size of these girls’ chests in gags. Though, I can’t blame them for that. There’s not much other substance to work with in either case.

My Senpai is Annoying is another office rom-com featuring a comically short woman. But, in that series, the roles are reversed from what we see in My Tiny Senpai. Futaba Igarashi is the kouhai. But, it’s still pretty much the same show. Well, except for that My Senpai is Annoying is better.

Takuma Shinozaki and Neko Katase from the anime series My Tiny Senpai
Takuma Shinozaki and Neko Katase

Unfortunately, combining Uzaki-chan and My Senpai is Annoying wasn’t a recipe for success. All it did was take the worst aspects of each of those series and put them in one. It didn’t learn from the mistakes those series made. If it had, it could have been good.

Also, as I previously mentioned, My Tiny Senpai didn’t do anything new. So, if you’ve already seen Uzaki-chan and My Senpai is Annoying, there’s no reason to watch this series. And that’s an issue because this series has the same target audience as those. There’s a very good chance that My Tiny Senpai viewers have seen the other two.

Okay, but what if you really liked both of those other series? Wouldn’t that mean you’d like My Tiny Senpai, too? That’s possible. But, the stats don’t back that up. Those other series have far more viewers and higher ratings, which is a bad sign for this one.

The Side Characters Carry the Show

If there’s one positive thing I can say about My Tiny Senpai, it’s that the side characters are pretty good. In fact, the side characters are the only thing I liked about the series. The two main characters just aren’t interesting.

The best character is Chinatsu Hayakawa, Shiori’s and Takuma’s coworker. She’s also Takuma’s childhood friend. But, that bit of information isn’t very important. What’s more important is that she has a crush on their boss and participates in cosplay events in her spare time.

Speaking of the boss, he’s a decent character. Chihiro Akina seems much older than the rest of the characters due to his white hair and personality. But, I don’t think he’s actually supposed to be old. He might only be a few years older than the rest of the cast — 10 years at most.

Takuma Shinozaki and Shiori Katase wearing kigurumi from the anime series My Tiny Senpai
Takuma Shinozaki and Shiori Katase wearing kigurumi

The third important side character is Yutaka Shinozaki, Takuma’s older sister. She’s obsessed with small, cute things. And, what in this series is small and cute? That’s right, Shiori. Yutaka does everything in her power to make her brother and Shiori a couple. And, she’s not alone in this endeavor.

Chihiro (the boss) loves office romances. At least, as long as they don’t involve him. So, he’s always shipping his employees with each other. And the pairing that he’s most interested in is Takuma and Shioro. So, naturally, Chihiro and Yutaka team up to push those two into a relationship.

There are other supporting characters besides these three. But, these are the major supporting characters. The others show up in a handful of episodes and aren’t very memorable. There’s another guy in the same department as Takuma and Shiori. And, there are a few characters from a different department.

Final Thoughts

My Tiny Senpai gets a 4/10 from me. It doesn’t do anything that hasn’t been done before. And the stuff it does isn’t even done very well. Even the OP and ED are forgettable and uninteresting. But, the supporting characters are pretty entertaining at times.
